The "Banque Centrale de Tunisie" (Central Bank of Tunisia) has issued on 27.03.2020, a new 10 Tunisian Dinar Banknote featuring Dr. Tewhida Ben Chiekh (1909-2010), a first for the country, honouring women in the scientific and medical fields.

The release of the Banknote also comes at an opportune time to honour medical professionals who are at the frontline in Tunisia's fight against the Chinese/Wuhan Virus.
About Dr. Tawhida Ben Cheikh (1909-2010):
Born in 1909, she was a pioneer in women's medicine and is particularly renowned for her work in women's health and specialisation in gynaecology. She broke all boundaries for women in a North African country.
In 1928, she became the first Muslim woman to become/practice as a physician in North Africa after passing the baccalaureate in Tunisia, becoming the first female doctor in modern medicine.
In 1936, she graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Paris. She eventually specialised in Gynaecology and headed campaigns around access to contraception and abortion.
Those efforts led to legalisation of abortion in 1965, but only for married women with more than five children who had the approval of their husband.
Just eight years later, Tunisia gave all women access to abortion within the first trimester, regardless of their partner's approval.
She also established "Leila", the first Tunisian, French-language magazine for women.
At the age of 54, Dr. Ben Cheikh was the first woman to sit on the National Council of the Order of Physicians of Tunisia.
She was an active proponent of Family Planning and in the sixties and seventies instructed doctors in related fields of speciality. She also served as Vice President of the Tunisian Red Crescent and founded Tunisia's first family planning clinic. She often provided free medical services to the poor.
She was also very active in the Nationalist Movement that won independence from France in 1956.
She passed away at the age of 101 in 12/2010.
This Banknote will circulate alongside presently circulating Banknotes in Tunisia.
About women featuring on Banknotes:
A 2017 study estimated that only 15% of the world's Banknotes have featured women.
Globally, only 18 countries have women on their currencies including - Argentina, Australia, China (of the Wuhan Virus fame, also called Covid-19), Syria, Sweden, New Zealand, Mexico, Great Britain etc.
Before Ben Chiekh, two other women have appeared on Arab Banknotes.
Dr. Ben Chiekh replaces Dido, also known as Queen Elissa on the Tunisian 10 Dinar Banknote. Queen Dido was the founder and first Queen of Carthage - a Phoenician Empire which span across the Mediterranean from Modern-day Tunisia.
Syria's 500 Pound Banknote features Queen Zenobia, a third century Queen of the Palmyrene Empire who led a revolt against the Roman Empire.
The new Banknote:
On the Front of the 10 Dinar (DIX DINARS) Banknote is seen a portrait of Dr. Tawhida ben Cheikh, which is based on an actual contemporary photograph.
The words - "TAWHIDA BEN CHIEKH (1909-2010) are inscribed in English and Arabic.

At the bottom edges of the Front, two horizontal lines have been placed for the visually impaired users, easily recognisable by touch.
A layer of varnish protects the two sides of the Banknote against dirt and grease.
The 10 Dinar Banknote is printed on cotton paper and is predominantly blue in colour. Its dimensions are 140.0 mm x 73.0 mm.
The new Banknote includes several security features:
- The OMRON rings - a device used by many countries to guard against digital copying, appear on both sides.
- A watermark through the image of Dr. CHeikh and the numeral "10" that is visible when the Banknote is presented through a light source.
- A windowed security thread that appears continuus when looked at over a light, but discontinuous otherwise.
- A circle on the upper left corner containing the numeral "10" that changes colour depending on the angle of view.
- Micro-text printing of "DIX DINARS" below the portrait of Ben Chiekh and in other places.
