1316) Orell Fussli (1519-2019), Switzerland: Celebrating the 500 Anniversary milestone of the Banknote and Security Paper printing major with the issue of a "House Note":

Banknote printers have a unique manner of celebrating their milestones and at the same time, show off their technical prowess - they issue "House Notes" in their own honour.

In 2019, the Zurich, Switzerland based Banknote and Security Printing major - Orell Fussli - memorialised its 500th Anniversary with such a Note, intended to "reflect its rich past and at the same time project it into the future."

Founded in 1519, Orell Fussli, the Banknote & security paper printing major celebrated its 500th Anniversary in 2019. It was originally established as a book printer and publisher. Presently, Security printing is its primary business, but it is also involved in book selling and publishing.

In commemoration of this milestone, it issued a new "House Note" - in fact, three separate Notes incorporating the same design, each one differentiated by the choice of substrate:

- Durasafe(R) - The composite of Paper and Polymer, Durasafe(R) has two outer layers of cotton Banknote Paper, fused together with a central core of transparent polymer.

- Cotton - The well-known properties of cotton guarantee a recognisable tactile feel.

- Guardian(TM) - A pure Polymer core coated with multiple opaque layers to provide a durable, secure substrate.

The design concept - "time":

The planning for his House Note began in 2016, when the company retained Christophe Metroz - a Swiss designer with no background in Banknote design except for a short internship.

He worked in cooperation with Orell Fussli's chief engraver and KBA-NotaSys of Wurzburg, Germany, whose printing presses are used for 95 percent of the world's Banknotes.

The design is inspired by one basic theme - "time" in the story of human achievement. With a contemporary touch conceived by Christophe Metroz, the uniqueness of the Note consists of one single integrated design adapted to the technical requirements of the three different substrate types enumerated above.

The design is integrated and adapted according to the individual characteristics of each substrate, which underlines Orell Fussli's expertise in creating a wide range of tailor-made solutions for its customers.

This new "House Note" is a fitting tribute to the unique skills of the printers, designers, scientists and personnel of Orell Fussli who are all celebrating this half-millennial milestone/event.

The House Note:

A reference to Swiss symbols on both sides is seen on this House Note. A symbolic human face was designed by combining a portrait by Albrecht Durer, who painted when the company was founded, and a picture of an anonymous woman of today.

The City of Zurich is portrayed in its transformation from a very old image into cartographic data.

Time is represented in the symbols of a water clock (clepsydra), spiral, labyrinth and hourglass.

The description of the House Note explains that this one is, in the end, just like almost all other notes - guardians of history, telling the stories of our time, while reminding us of where we come from and who we are.
