838) Marco Polo, Explorer Italy (1254 - 8/9.01.1324) : A 10 Euro Silver Coin issued by Instituto Poligrafico e Zecca di Stato , the Italian State Mint (2018):

About Marco Polo:

Marco Polo was an Italian merchant, explorer and writer, born in the Republic of Venice in 1254 who is considered to be one of the greatest voyagers and explorers of all time.

The Obverse and Reverse of the 10 Euro Silver Coin shown against a background image of Marco Polo, the explorer & traveller, taken from a detail of a mosaic by Enrico Podio in Tursi Palace, Genoa.

In 1269, together with his father Niccolo and his uncle Matteo, (who were well-known merchants) he travelled on an epic journey to Asia along the Silk Route/Road and reached China. His father and uncle had  earlier also had an audience with the Chinese emperor -  Kublai Khan during one of their travels to China.

Marco  returned only after 24 years of travels to find Venice was at war with Genoa.

Marco was imprisoned and dictated stories of his travels to a cell-mate - Rustichello da Pisa, who were both prisoners of the Genoa Republic.

Pisa  penned details about Marco's travels in "travel journals" and recorded descriptions of the places he visited in the his book "Livres des merveilles du monde" (or "Book of the Marvels of the World", which is also known as "The Travels of Marco Polo"). The book described to the Europeans, the wealth and great size of China, its capital Peking and other Asian cities and countries, he visited.

Though Marco was not the first European to reach China, he was the first one to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience.  His work inspired several other explorers/travellers to explore the world by land and sea, as it represented an important source of information.

Marco Polo never produced a map that illustrated his journey, but, his daughters drew several maps to the Far East based on his accounts.

These maps contained details of his journey, including sea0routes to Japan, Siberia's Kamchatka Peninsula and the Bering Strait and even to the coastlines of Alaska, centuries before the "rediscovery" of the Americas by the Europeans.

These Maps based on Marco's travel accounts, also influenced European cartography, which led to introduction of the famous "Fra Mauro map of the world" (in 1453) , which became a reference point for several later travellers.

The Commemorative Coin:

The Obverse of the Silver 10 Euro Coin features a portrait of Marco Polo, taken from a detail of a mosaic by Enrico Podio in Tursi Palace, Genoa.

In the background are stylised elements of oriental architecture with floral decorations. On the left is the family name of the designer "PETRASSI" (Full name of the designer is - Silvia Petrassi)

Around the periphery is given the name of the issuing country "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA"

On the Reverse of the Silver 10 Euro Coin are shown Marco and his family on their journey through the East to the court of Emperor Kublai Khan, taken from a composition with the details of the miniatures drawn from the "Book of Marvels of the World" by Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa, a work conserved at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris.

On the upper periphery is the inscription "MARCO POLO" and Chinese ideograms meaning "Marco Polo". In the centre left, the letter "R" denotes the mint mark of the Mint of Rome. On  the right is mentioned the denomination of the coin "10 EURO", in exergue is mentioned the year of issue "2018".

The specifications of the coin are:

Denomination: 10 Euro; Metal Composition: .999 Fine Silver; Diameter/Size: 34.0 mm; Weight: 22.0 grams; Mint: "Mint of Rome" or the "Instituto Poligrafico e Zecca di Stato" (the State Mint) Year of issue: 2018; Designer: Silvia Petrassi.

836) "Lake Argyle" - "The Jewel of the Kimberley", Australia: Limited Edition Series of Rare diamond ingots in Pink Gold (10 Oz. and 1 Oz.) and Platinum (1 Oz.) studded with  eight Argyle Pink Diamonds each issued by the Perth Mint, Australia in collaboration with the Argyle Pink Diamond Mine: Ingots issued in October 2018:

About the "Lake Argyle" ingots:

The breath-taking Lake Argyle, the "Jewel of the Kimberley" is situated in the far North of Western Australia. Nestled among the rugged Kimberley landscape and located near the world famous Argyle Diamond Mine, the lake holds a staggering 32 million cubic metres of water - more than 18 times the volume of Sydney Harbour !!

These precious metal ingots celebrate this iconic body of water. Struck in 1 Oz. and 10 Oz. of 91.67% pink gold and 1 Oz. of 99.95% Platinum, each of these bars bears a design representing the lake on an atmospheric moonlit night.

The Platinum & Pink Gold Ingots studded with Argyle Pink Diamonds placed against the backdrop of a starry night sky. The inscription at the extreme right bottom is " ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS" - "SELECT ATELIER".

Elevating the ingots are seven Argyle pink diamonds which have been hand-set on each of the Reverse to represent one of the best known features of the night sky - the five prominent stars of the Southern Cross, together with the two pointers - Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri.

An eighth pink diamond has been embedded on the Obverse of each ingot, within the representation of a star-burst.

The Southern Cross Constellation (or "Crux"):

The Southern Cross Constellation lies in a rich area of the Milky Way. Although it is the smallest constellation, it is instantly recognisable and is squeezed between the legs of the Centaur - Centaurus.

The longer axis of the Southern Cross or "Crux", points towards the South Celestial Pole. Its stars were known to the ancient Greeks., who regarded them as part of Centaurus. They were recognised as a separate constellation in the 16th Century.

"Alpha Crucis" or "Acrux" is the most Southerly first-magnitude star. It is a glittering double that is readily divisible through a small telescope. The two components are of magnitudes 1.3 and 1.8.

A wider 5th magnitude star can be seen through binoculars; it is not related to Acrux. The star at the top of the cross is the 2nd magnitude red giant "Gamma Crucis" or "Gacrux". It has an unrelated 6th magnitude companion visible through binoculars.

Nearby, "Mu Crucis" is a wide pair of 4th and 5th magnitude stars easily separated through a small telescope or a good binoculars.

When European sea-farers returned from exploring the Southern latitudes in the 15th and 16th Centuries, they reported stars they had never seen before. Among the explorers was Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), an Italian who in 1501 charted Alpha and Beta Centauri and the stars of the Crux.

A collaboration creating notable Numismatic masterpieces:

In this banner, the Platinum and Pink Gold Ingots are placed against an image of the Southern Cross with a star burst at right, below which is the inscription - "ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS" & "SELECT ATELIER".

These precious metal coins are the result of a collaboration between the Perth Mint, Australia and an Argyle Pink Diamonds Authorised Partner, who have together created several masterpieces - "The Jewelled Phoenix",  the most expensive collector coin in the world to date - "Discovery" and the "Pink Panther" (Gold & Platinum ingots).

The Kimberley being the sole source of these pink diamonds, with the increasing scarcity of pink diamonds - currently, the total supply of the most spectacular pinks of over half a carat would probably fit into a champagne flute, while the latest diamonds of over a carat would barely fill a teaspoon - these coins/ & ingots are destined to be coveted for all time.

Although the diamonds studded in these precious metal ingots are smaller than the ones used in earlier issues, nevertheless they display the mesmerising appeal of these beautiful stones.

With just 6 10 Oz pink Gold, 250 1 Oz pink Gold and 50 1 Oz pure Platinum ingots available, each ingot represents a collector's delight.
