This Coin Series of coloured Titanium coins features the wildlife of British Overseas Territories (BOT).

Two distinctive animals native to the South Atlantic - the Queen Triggerfish and the Macaroni Penguin are featured on the coins of Ascension Island and of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands respectively, both variants having been minted by the Pobjoy Mint, UK.

The Macaroni Penguins from South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands:

These Titanium 2 Pound coins depict the Macaroni Penguin found in South Georgia & Sandwich Islands. The coin is also available in an Uncirculated Cupro-Nickel variant.

Often regarded as the "emblem of Antarctica", penguins are the most common birds found in the frozen Antarctic. With the total number of breeding penguin pairs in the Antarctic region estimated at around 20.0 million, they live in vast quantities with some colonies outnumbering the population of some  major cities.

Macaroni Penguins can be found from the Sub-Antarctic to the Antarctic Peninsula, including South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands.

Despite their large numbers, the population has drastically dwindled in several locations, including a drop of about 50% in the South Georgia population. This decline in numbers has led to the species being listed as "Vulnerable" in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) List of Threatened species.

Named after an unusual Macaroni hairstyle of the 18th Century, this particular species has spectacular orange tufty plumes for eyebrows. They are also among the more vocal of the penguins, especially when establishing their territories.

The  Coin:

The Obverse and Reverse of the 2 Pounds Titanium coin shown together.

The Obverse of the 2 Pounds Titanium Coin shows an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, which is an exclusive design of the Pobjoy Mint. The initials "PM" appear below the Queen's neck. The peripheral inscriptions are - "SOUTH GEORGIA & SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS", "2019".

The Reverse of the 2 Pounds Titanium Coin shows a group of four Macaroni Penguins facing left featured in their natural habitat/environment.

Due to the difficulty of striking Titanium coins and the fact that Titanium reacts differently with every strike, each coin is technically different from all others. There is also a lined effect that is present on the coins which is unique to this metal.

    1. True, Vikram. It does sound like that. I think when the early exploration ships reached these islands, someone must have yelled "where's my sandwich". So the crew said "Ah!!there it is" and likewise for macaroni. Actually so many islands were renamed all over the world by these chaps, that they couldn't find more names, so they must have named it after food, which they were missing on board ships.😆
