The Reserve Bank of Australia has unveiled on 22.02.2019, the fourth Banknote which has undergone a redesign in addition to an update in security features, after the earlier release of $5, $10,& $50 Banknotes.
The new $20 Banknote continues to celebrate the lives of two outstanding Australians whose personal stories are told through the images that have been incorporated onto the Banknote's design. The selection of these prominent Australians also provides a rich narrative and an eventful history about their lives in Australia.
To recall, Australia became the first country in the world to develop, innovate and circulate an entire series of polymer Banknote denominations in 1996.
The transition from paper Banknotes to Polymer was made after the world's first banknote - a commemorative issue - was released in 1988, in celebration of the Bicentenary of the first European permanent settlement in Australia.
The same innovative security features from the previously circulated $5, $10 and $50 Banknotes have been incorporated to ensure increased technology is applied to the new Banknotes, which "raises the bar" for potential counterfeiters.
The redesigned $20 Banknote retains the same Orange Colour scheme and Dimensions of 144 mm x 65 mm. This is the same as the presently circulating banknotes of this denomination, which were first issued in 1994, but the new Banknotes now inclue updated or modified portraits of the current personalities presently featured. The concept designer of this Banknote is Emery Studio.
As part of the redesign, each Banknote in the new Series also features a different species of native Australian wattle (plant life) and birds.
The $20 Banknote depicts the Box-leaf Wattle (Acacia buxifolia) and the Laughing Kookaburra.
The first issue of the $20 Australian (AUD) Banknote is scheduled for October 2019.

The Front of the $20 new Australian (AUD) Banknote features Mary Reibey.
There is also an image of a Port Jackson schooner in Sydney Cove in the early 1800s, similar to the type owned by Mary Reibey. Besides it is a traditional "Eora nowie" (canoe). Aboriginal women fishing from these vessels were a common sight on the harbour in Reibey's time.
About Mary Reibey (1777-1855):
She arrived in Sydney abroad the "royal Admiral" in October 1792 and by 1820, her fortune was wirth about 20,000 Pounds - a staggering amount of wealth at that time - and held 1,000 acres of land/property.
She passed away on 30.05.1855 and was remembered as one of the colony's most successful and legendary businesswomen, who broke out of rigidly defined social norms to earn a reputation as an astute and successful individual.
Aside from running her shipping and trading enterprises, she also became known for her support of charity, religion and education.
The Back of the $20 new Australian (AUD) Banknote features John Flynn.
Also seen on this face, to the left of Flynn's portrait is an image of an RFDS De Havilland aircraft leaving a remote Broken Hill homestead in 1948. A pedal powered transceiver used by the Aerial Medical Service to improve communication in remote areas is seen at far lower right.
About John Flynn (1880-1951):
He founded the Australian Inland Mission, which later became the Frontier Services.
Flynn wrote "The Bushman's Companion", which was a small volume of useful information first published in 1910 and was composed for the benefit of outback residents and contained sections on first aid, bible readings, funeral services and a calendar.
Australia's first flight of the Aerial Medical Service (AMS) took place from Cloncurry in Queensland. Presently, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) remains the largest and most comprehensive aero-medical emergency and health-care service in the world.
Other features:
Tactile Application: Ease of recognition was an important characteristic when redesigning the new $20 (AUD) Banknote with the addition of "tactile" features being included.
This added feature is designed to help visually impaired users to distinguish between different denominations of Banknotes. On the $20 denomination, this has been achieved with the addition of three raised bumps on each side of the long edges.
Vertical Transparent Window: The new design also features a clear window that contains dynamic elements, including a flying Kookaburra that moves its wings and changes colour, and a reversing number "20". There is also an area with a rolling-colour effect and microprint featuring excerpts from Flynn's publication "The Bushman's Companion" and the names of Reibey's ships.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has announced that the scheduled date of release for this Banknote is in October 2019. The existing Banknotes will remain legal tender like all the previously issued RBA Banknotes.
Next year a new $100 Banknote with upgraded security features is scheduled to join this series.
