About Contemporary Wood Design, Slovenia: Anže Logar – maker of Bled "pletna" boats:

The very best modern craftsmen using wood as their basic material include Anže Logar, who builds superlative wooden boats at Zazero na Mlinem in Bled.

His main product is the iconic wooden boat of Lake Bled, called a "pletna", which has been a feature of the lake for centuries.

Some records date the first use of these craft back to the 12th century, when they were used to carry building materials to the island.

The boats were called "ledenice", and a little later also "plitvice". More reliable are the testaments from the second half of the 16th century that tell of the boats being used to take pilgrims to the island.

Since when the term "pletna" came into use is not known. But for this reason people know its etymology, which explains that this was a craft with a flat bottom, known in Bavarian German as "Plätten" and in Carinthian German  as "Plette" or "Plettn". In Latin, flat-bottomed boats were called "plata" or "platta".

The "Pletna" is therefore a traditional Bled boat, measuring 7–8 metres in length and 2 metres in width, and it is capable of carrying up to 20 people.

The craft is piloted by specially trained pletnarji, who propel it standing up (using the 'Stehruder' technique) with two oars. The right to row these boats has been handed down from generation to generation for centuries.

There are presently 23 such boats on Lake Bled. In addition to the iconic Bled boat, Anže Logar makes other outstanding wooden craft.
