2206) Krn Lake, Slovenia: Pošta Slovenije (Post of Slovenia) has issued a stamp featuring the popular Lake: Date/Year of Stamp issue: 28.01.2022:

Krn is a mountain of the southwestern Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia. 

It is the highest mountain in the Krn Mountain Range. The mountain is located about 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the Adriatic Sea. 

The Soča River flows west of the peak, and the smaller Lepenjica River northeast and the Tolminka River southwest of it. Krn has a mighty western wall, which can be best seen from Kobarid or Drežnica.

On the southern slope of the mountain lie the small villages of Vrsno, Krn, Drežnica, Drežniške Ravne, and Magozd. On the northern side lies Lake Krn, the largest glacial lake in Slovenia.

The top of neighbouring Mount Batognica (2,164 m or 7,100 ft) was blown off by an accidental weapon depot explosion. Many remnants from World War I remain scattered around the peak.

About Krn Lake:

To the Northeast of Mt Krn (2,244 m), at 1,394 metres above sea level lies the high mountain Krn Lake, which measures 180 metres in width and 400 metres in length. 

The lake covers a total surface area of 4.6 hectares, and is 17 metres deep. Due to its position high in the mountains, the lake is frozen over for several months, and covered in snow in winter.

 Researchers have determined that the lake is of glacial origin and at one time was much deeper. Its surface was at least 32 metres higher. Two species of fish inhabit the lake: minnow and brook trout. The trout were brought to the lake in 1929. Krn Lake is the biggest high mountain lake in Slovenia.
