About Firefighters Day:
Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.
International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May every year.
International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4, in order to honour firefighters for their service internationally, remember firefighters who lost their lives during service.
It was established after a proposal by Australian firefighter, JJ Edmondson, was made on 04.01.1999, following the deaths of five firefighters fighting a bushfire in Australia on 02.12.1998.
The firefighting incident in the Australian wildfire - a brief:
On 01.12.1998, firefighters of the Geelong West Fire Brigade responded to a call for assistance by other firefighters fighting a wildfire from Linton, Victoria, Australia.
A sudden change of wind direction caused due to a cold front led to the fire truck being engulfed by the fire on the way to refilling the water tank. As a result, five Geelong West firefighters were killed: Garry Vredeveldt, Christopher Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong. This incident eventually led to the proposal for an International Firefighters' Day.
Everyday heroes:
Firefighters are also called “everyday heroes”. Firefighters’ work is not limited to fires. They are the rescuers of people and their belongings in floods, earthquakes and natural and man-made disasters.
With their professional and practical training, the firefighters are on a permanent state of alert. Disciplined and courageous, they are a powerful shield for protecting the lives and belongings of their fellow human beings. Their work is often carried out in a state of imminent danger. Sadly, some lose their lives.
They become heroes, permanently kept in the hearts of the members of the community they have saved and protected.
On Firefighter's Day, everyone is invited to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving their community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all.
At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.
International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.
Sound off ritual:
A "sound off" occurs at noon local time on the first Sunday of May, as part of International Firefighters' Day.
It involves turning on fire sirens for 30 seconds, and a subsequent moment of silence for one minute to commemorate all firefighters who were killed in duty.
The sound off began in 2002, and has been continued annually.
Fire prevention:
Fire prevention and the need for more intensive and thorough training is promoted through International Firefighters' Day, and the day is seen as an important opportunity to raise both skills and awareness.
Red and blue ribbon:
The IFFD ribbons are linked to colours symbolic of the main elements firefighters work with - red for fire and blue for water.
These colours also are internationally recognised as representing emergency service.
The red and blue ribbon is a symbol used for International Firefighters Day, the ribbon is 5 cm (2 inches) long and 1 cm (0.39 inches) wide, with the two separate colors conjoined at the top.
The red of the ribbon represents fire while the blue represents water. The ribbon is traditionally worn on the lapel but is not limited to the lapel.
By proudly wearing and displaying blue and red ribbons pinned together or by participating in a memorial or recognition event, we can show our gratitude to firefighters everywhere.
The Romanian Post - RomFilatelia (Romanian Post) has brought out two Postage Stamp on 13.09.2023 - a day when Romania also honours its firefighters in addition to Firefighter's Day:
The 13th of September is part of the calendar of firefighters history, being marked, since 1953, in memory of the battle on Dealul Spirii, in 1848, when their heroism, proven in the confrontation with the Ottoman army, was officially recognised and honoured by the ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
In 1863, when the reorganised Romanian army, received the new National Flags, he chose the 13th of September for this celebration.
Under the slogan "Full respect for the conquerors of the flames", Romfilatelia has introduced into circulation on September 13th this year, a set of two postage stamps titled "FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY", consisting of two postage stamps (with face values of Lei 9 and Lei 10) and a First Day Cover.
The First Day Cover (FDC) depicts a firefighter at left ready with his/her walkie-talkie, fire helmet, fire-axe and firemen's traditional overalls, ready to do his/her job in the protection of the community. The title reads - September 13, Firefighter's Day - Full Respect to the conquerors of the flame".
The two stamp set is affixed at top right cancelled with a special cancellation handstamp/postmark depicting two crossed fire-axes in the centre. The Cancellation is of Bucharest Post Office and the date of Cancellation is - "13.09.2023".
It is a special time to stop and reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters is held on the first Sunday in May at noon local time each year when fire sirens sound for 30 seconds followed by a minute’s silence in memory of, and respect for, all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or passed on before us.

Yes there are several stamps/coins on banks including, SBI, Central Bank, Stanchart, PNB, Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of Mysore, Union Bank etc.
