The
three wise men:
These three men
included in this three coin series – all born in Jewish families – in
the Austro-Hungarian Empire viz., Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Victor
Frankl were the founders of the three different Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy,
the scientific discipline established in the Austrian capital in the 20th
Century.
Freud (1856-1939)
was the Father of Psychoanalysis, Adler (1870-1937)
founded Individual Psychology, while Frankl (1905-1997)
was the Founder of Logo Therapy, the three pioneering schools of
psychotherapy to which this fascinating series is dedicated.
The portraits of the
three great men will feature on the Obverse of each coin, while the Reverse
illustrates the core concept of their respective path-breaking theories.
Psychotherapeutic methods
and theories have proliferated since the early days, but that might never have
happened without the foundations laid by Freud, Adler and Frankl.

first coin in the series is on Sigmund Freud:
Celebrating the pioneering
schools of psychotherapy – the scientific discipline established in the
Austrian capital in the 20th Century – this “Enlightening three
coin Series” – titled the “Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy” – has featured Sigmund
Freud, the founding father of Psychoanalysis, on the first coin in the
Series.
Freud’s theories have been
the subject of much discussion world-wide. Nevertheless, he was undoubtedly one
of the great thinkers of the 20th Century and his work/contribution is
still very much recognised, researched and followed some 80 years since his
passing away.
About
Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939):
He was born in a Jewish
family on 06.05.1856, in the present day Czech Republic. Freud was a
neurologist who set up his clinical practice in Vienna in 1886.
He used a technique called
“Free Association” in which he encouraged his patients to talk freely from
previous relationships onto the relationship with the analyst.
He made his name as the
“Founder of Psychoanalysis”, with the help of his mentor Josef Breuer
(1842-1925).
In 1938, Freud and
his family fled Vienna to London to escape the Nazis.
He passed away in London
in 1939. Many terms in psychoanalysis are attributed to Freud such as –
“Oedipus complex”, “super ego”, “Freudian slip”, and “libido” which are used by
Psychologists all across the world even today and have become part of our
common language, as well as, in the continued practice of modern psychoanalysis.

Gold Coin
On the Obverse of the 50 Euros Gold Coin a portrait of
Freud, based on a photo taken in 1926 by Ferdinand Schmutzer is depicted. The
text to the left of the portrait reads “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” (standing for the
“Austrian Republic) in two lines positioned vertically. To the right of the
portrait is the text “SIGMUND FREUD”, also positioned vertically, with the
denomination of the coin “50 EURO” and the year of issue “2017”, placed below
the image of Freud.

Euro Gold Coin illustrates the “will to pleasure”, a central element in
Freud’s work.
