The "Gates of Jerusalem Coin Series" is struck in Gold and Silver in strictly limited mintages, which take us on an amazing tour of the Walls of Jerusalem, over thousands of years of history.

The Walls around the Old City of Jerusalem were built in the 16th Century by the Sultan of Turkey, known as Suleiman the Magnificent.

Eight Gates were constructed within the walls:

There are eight gates within the walls of Jerusalem. The gates are open and serve as passageways to the sacred and historic sites and markets of the city, with the exception of the Golden Gate or Mercy Gate, as it is known, which remains closed. It is said that this gate will be opened miraculously, when the Messiah comes and the dead are resurrected

About the New Gate:

The New Gate in the Jerusalem Old City Wall was built in 1889 by the Ottoman authorities. It is the newest gate out of the 8 main gates in the walls and was built at their highest point.

The New Gate rendered the passage between the Old City of Jerusalem and the Christian institutions across the street more convenient.

While the other gates within the walls of the Old City are more impressive in appearance with more decorative elements, the New Gate is plainer and consists of a single opening in the wall.

The other gates were fortified in the 16th Century, when defensive needs were greater.

By the late 19th Century, security conditions had improved and the Greek Orthodox Church undertook the construction of shops, store-rooms, stables and residential apartments along the street leading to the gate. As such, the area close to the gate became a lively traffic and trading area.

From 1948, the New Gate was blocked, when it was closed by the Jordanians, until 1967, when it was reopened by the Israeli Defence Forces after the Six-Day War.
