The Header/Banner shows the obverse and reverse of the circulation type coin against a background image of a Mennonite family looking forward to their new country - Mexico. At left is the mintmark "OM" of the Mexican Mint.
The Banco de Mexico has issued on 08.08.2022, new 20-peso commemorative coins marking the arrival of the Mennonite community, a group of conservative Protestant Europeans who originate from the Dutch provinces and Northern Germany.
Mexico’s Mennonites are the descendants of these conservative Protestants whose strict interpretation of the Bible emerged out of the 16th-century Reformation in Europe.
The ancestors of the vast majority of Mexican Mennonites first settled in lands which were part of the Russian Empire in the late 18th and 19th centuries, coming from the Vistula delta in West Prussia.
Many of the Mexican Mennonites have Dutch and Prussian ancestry, languages, and customs.
The Coin:
The 2022-dated circulation quality 20-peso, 12-sided bi-metallic coins have been minted by the Casa de Moneda de Mexico at their facilities located in San Luis Potosí, on behalf of the Banco de Mexico. Founded in 1535, it is the oldest functioning mint in North America.
The Reverse of the 20 Peso circulation coin depicts a typical traditional four-member Mennonite family centred with a railway to the left, symbolising their mode of transport to their new home and a ploughed field to the right in reference to the agricultural activity of most Mennonite communities.
Above the primary design is a latent image composed of the number "20" and to the left is the micro-text "COMUNIDAD PIONERA" (“Pioneer Community”).
Below the main design is the coins’ denomination "$20", with the years "1922" and "2022" placed on either side of the denomintional value.
Along the upper edge is the commemorative text "CIEN AÑOS DE LA LLEGADA DE LOS MENONITAS A MÉXICO" (meaning “One hundred years of the arrival of the Mennonites in Mexico”), and to the right is the distinctive "M°" mintmark of the Mexican Mint.
The Obverse of the 20 Peso circulation coin depicts the standard design, which includes the National Coat of Arms in sculptural relief, depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake in its talon.
Above the crest is the text "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" (“United Mexican States”) forming the upper semi-circle.
