The 2023 coin is a Proof base metal issue, the fourth in the Endangered Animals €5 series, following earlier issues dedicated to the Tiger (2020), the Polar Bear (2021) and the Jaguar (2022).
African Elephants: are members of the genus Loxodonta comprising two living elephant species, the African bush elephant (L. africana) and the smaller African forest elephant (L. cyclotis).
Both are social herbivores with grey skin but differ in the size and colour of their tusks and in the shape and size of their ears and skulls.
Both species are considered at heavy risk of extinction on the IUCN Red List as of 2021, the bush elephant is considered endangered and the forest elephant is considered critically endangered. They are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and poaching for the illegal ivory trade is a threat in several range countries as well.
Loxodonta is one of two extant genera of the family Elephantidae. The name refers to the lozenge-shaped enamel of their molar teeth. Fossil remains of Loxodonta species have been excavated in Africa, dating to the Middle Pliocene.

The Header/Banner showcases the Elephant herd "Glow-in-the-Dark" feature at left, In the centre is featured the Coin showcasing an Elephant herd. At right is Obverse of the Coin which is a composition of animal species living in harmony with the environment. The animals include the elephant, frog, eagle, turtle, whale, dolphins and toucan.

The Reverse depicts an African elephant in its natural habitat, in full colour.
The inscriptions are - "ELEFANTE AFRICANO" and "CINQUE EURO" (or "Five Euro").

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Coin is a composition of animal species living in harmony with the environment. The animals include the elephant, frog, eagle, turtle, whale, dolphins and toucan.
All of these coins in the series offer a glow-in-the-dark technology on the Reverse.

Thanks, Raj. No I have not come across any coin with an Indian elephant. I do have post on the blog mentioning Indian War elephants" and an elephant baby called "Yogi" which we had seen at Rajaji National Park about a decade ago.
