The Header/Banner presents the Obverse and Reverse of the Aluminum-Brass Coins issued by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano – IPZS.

The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano – IPZS launch their third and last collector coin in the popular Endangered Animals series.

A colour depiction of koalas features on the obverse.

Dedicated to animals in danger of extinction and created in collaboration with the WWF, the first coin was released in 2022 featuring the jaguar and last year, the African elephant was highlighted.

For 2024, the series travels down under to Australia and focuses one of the continent’s most well-known and loved animals, the Koala.

Though often incorrectly described as a bear, Koalas belong to the marsupial species of mammals and inhabit woodlands along the eastern and southern Australian coastal regions, living mostly on eucalyptus leaves.

Koalas were well known to indigenous peoples who hunted them for food.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries Koalas were hunted for skins for export which led to a population decline, prompting perhaps Australia’s first large-scale environmental response

Once ranked as a species of "least concern" in terms of their numbers, Koalas are now classed as "vulnerable" and are fully protected under Australian environmental law.

Disease, loss of habitat and more especially raging widespread wildfires of Australia in 2020 had reduced populations to the point that Koalas are now classed as vulnerable.  The shy gentle Koala is beloved by both Australians and people further afield and through their appeal to tourists, Koalas make a notable contribution to the Australian economy.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Aluminum-Brass coin has been designed by  Silvia Petrassi, and depicts a pair of Koalas, mother and cub portrayed in their natural environment and immersed in a vibrant composition of colours.

Above the primary design is the text "KOALA" and below along the lower periphery is the year "2024". To the right is the coin’s denomination "5 EURO" and to the lower left is the letter "R" (identifying the Mint of Rome).

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Aluminum-Brass coin design is common to all of the coins in the series and features a vibrant colour composition of some animal species representing the terrestrial fauna that coexist in harmony with the environment.

Above and to the right of the primary design and in a horizontal and vertical direction is the text "REPUBBLICA ITALANA".

The name of the coins’ designer "PETRASSI" is seen just under the composite.
