3370) "Ankylosaurus", Niue Island: Coin minted by: The Czech Mint: "Coin Series - The prehistoric world": "The wondrous world of Mesozoic Lizards": Denomination: $1 (One Dollar - NZD): Third Coin in the Series: Date/Year of Coin issue: 07/2022:
The Czech Mint's twelve-part series entitled Prehistoric World presents the wondrous realm of Mesozoic lizards – not only the dinosaurs that ruled the land, but also their relatives that conquered the sea and the air.
Diminutive creatures of all shapes and sizes disappeared from the world 66 million years ago, leaving behind only old bones and burning questions.
What did they look like? What did they do for a living? How did they communicate? How did they fight? How did they care for the young?
Many of the answers can be found on the brightly coloured silver coins.
The Third Coin release resembles the Ankylosaurus:
The third Mesozoic lizard that appears on the Czech Mint's silver coin from the Prehistoric World series is the Ankylosaurus.
The ten-metre-long Ankylosaurus was a slow and clumsy herbivore. But it was certainly not defenceless. It was protected from the attacks of large predators by bone armour.
Its broad head, topped with a beak, was covered with a series of horns and a layer of plates that fused with the skull bones.
Its neck, back and flanks were covered by interconnected bone plates, growths and bumps that formed a compact armour. Its tail was topped with a massive bone club.
This devastating defensive weapon, which the dinosaur carried just above the ground, could crush bones. The only vulnerable part of the ankylosaur's body was its unprotected abdomen.
