On the Reverse of this 1 Oz Silver Coin/Round, in addition to the iconic Owl, the design also shows a crescent moon, olive branch, and the Greek letters “AΘE,” which stands for “Alpha,” “Theta,” and “Epsilon,” meaning “Of the Athenians” in ancient Greek. 

Named for the goddess Athena, Athens was a key city-state that laid the foundations for Western civilisation. When one thinks of ancient Athens, images of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Zeus come to mind. 

In Greek mythology, the owl is Athena’s familiar and, according to legend, she sometimes took the form of her owl.
