The U.S. Mint had announced that 2020 would be the last year to feature the design, but in the fall it confirmed that it would begin its production run of 2021 dated Brilliant Uncirculated bullion "Silver Eagles" with John Mercanti’s original reverse design, ending the 35-year run of former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti’s popular Heraldic Eagle design, which debutedin 1986, and complete the 2021 run with the VERY FIRST issue of Emily Damstra’s new "Eagle landing" reverse design that shows a full image of a Bald Eagle coming in for a landing with an oak branch held in its talons.
This is also the first time the U.S. Mint has issued the American Silver Eagle in a single year featuring two different reverse designs, meaning that collectors can possess two different types of the iconic classic from 2021 - a truly memorable year for the American Eagle series!
To indicate the significant change, the U.S. Mint has issued "Type 1" or “T-1” pedigrees to 2021 Silver Eagle releases featuring Mercanti's original "Heraldic Eagle" Reverse Design and,
“Type 2” or “T-2” pedigrees to 2021 Silver Eagle releases featuring Emily Damstra's new "Eagle Landing" reverse design.
The new design shows the USA's National Bird with all of the values it embodies - in a unique way that could also convey traits such as diligence, cooperation, care and protection.
To celebrate this historical change, this 2-coin set includes the final issue of the Type-1 Silver Eagle in Mint State condition featuring Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle Reverse Design and the first issue of the Type-2 Silver Eagle in Mint State condition featuring Damstra’s Eagle Landing reverse design marking the end of one era and the beginning of the next - together in one coin set.
In addition, both coins in this set have been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in Mint State 70 condition with the prestigious First Releases designation that has been paired with an exclusive American Eagle-themed label.
Each 2021 American Silver Eagle has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Uncirculated Mint State-70 (MS70) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded coins have ZERO imperfections — showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended.
NGC has also certified that these Silver Eagles are First Releases (FR) coins, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 30 days of their release.
These coins because they are produced with new dies and considered to have sharper strikes and deeper mirrors than those that are struck later. Each coin will also come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with an exclusive Bald Eagle label.
What makes these 2021-dated coins so significant is that they represent BOTH the final Silver Eagles to feature John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design that appears on the reverse and the first to display Emily Damstra’s new reverse design.
