1888) "The Who" United Kingdom: The iconic Rock Group features on the latest “British Music Legends” Collector Coin Series issues from the Royal Mint, UK: Date of Coin Release: 24.05.2021:

The Royal Mint, United Kingdom has released on 24.05.2021, its latest collection of Gold and Silver Collector Coins which is part of their popular series titled “British Music Legends.”

Following in the footsteps of the three earlier tributes to music legends such as Queen, Elton John, and David Bowie, this latest tribute features "The Who".

About "The Who" Rock Group:

With nearly 60 years as an active rock band and millions of fans worldwide, "The Who" has become one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century and have sold over 100 million records internationally and over a billion global streams, members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame, the BRIT and GRAMMY Award winning, The Who, are considered by many today as "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World".

Formed in 1964 during the heyday of London’s swinging 60s, the four-piece band known as "The Detours" initially consisted of three schoolboys: Lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist and singer Pete Townsend, bass guitarist and singer John Entwistle, and, as a later member, drummer Keith Moon

"The Who" was a popular group, which helped to define an era in which British music was exploring in many different directions.

With such hits as ‘My Generation’, ‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘I Can See for Miles’, and the eight minute long ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, they became one of the 20th Centuries' greatest bands

Artists like Pink Floyd, The Clash, the Sex Pistols, and Jimi Hendrix, all cited The Who as inspiration, as did some of my own personal favourites like The Jam, Oasis, and Blur.

They also popularised music as fashion, with their Union Jack and RAF Roundel look, and wrote soundtracks for movies ‘Quadrophenia’ and ‘Tommy’, both now considered classics. The band still continues to perform and publish new material to this day.

The Commemorative Coin:

To celebrate the launch of the coin, co-founder and lead singer of The Who, Roger Daltrey, visited The Royal Mint to strike one of the very first coins, giving the band’s seal of approval on the new coin and its design.

The Reverse design of the Commemorative Coins, brought together by the Royal Mint and Bravado, Universal Music Group’s leading merchandise and brand management company. The design features a Union Jack Flag, The Who’s Logo and speaker-smashing Rickenbacker Guitar.

Together, the symbols form a pinball table, a tribute to the single "Pinball Wizard" and Album "Tommy", which was one of the band’s most famous creations.

The "Shock wave Effect"(SwE):

With the latest colour printing technology, elements of the coin have been digitally printed to showcase the vibrant red, white, and blue of the band’s emblem and using the latest innovative technology and manufacturing techniques, a number of coins will feature a special “shockwave” effect — SwE — radiating from the speaker and elevating the detail of the coin

Designers and craftspeople at the Royal Mint have developed this effect in honour of The Who’s record-breaking loud concert — a record that was held for a decade.

The Obverse design of the Commemorative Coins includes an effigy of  Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Jody Clark.

The denomination from "1 POUND to 1000 POUNDS" and the year of release "2021" have been inscribed on the outer periphery.

The incused edge inscription included only on the £2 one-ounce silver Proof coins reads "PINBALL WIZZARD" repeated.
