3214) Patrick Floyd Garret (1850-1908), Old West Lawman, bartender and customs agent, New Zealand: New Zealand Mint has issued a 1.00 Oz Silver Coin recalling the Lawman: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2024:

Patrick Floyd Garrett was an  American Old West lawman, bartender and customs agent known for killing Billy the Kid. He was the sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, as well as Dona Ana County, New Mexico.

Billy the Kid:

Billy the Kid (William Henry Bonney Jr) was wanted for murder in the aftermath of the Lincoln County War.

On 02.11.1880, Garrett was elected sheriff of Lincoln Country, New Mexico. defeatin g the incumbent George Kimball by a vote of 320 to 179.

Although Garrett's term did not begin until 01.01.1881, Sheriff George Kimball appointed him a deputy sheriff for the remainder of Kimball's term.

On 16.12.1901, President Theodore Roosevelt nominatted Garett to the post of Collector of Customs in El Paso. He also became one of President Roosevelt's three "White House Gunfighters".

On 19.12.1880, Billy the Kid, Charlie Bowdre, Tom Pickett, Billy Wilson, Dave Rudabaugh and Tom Offoliard rode into Fort Sumner. Lying in wait was Deputy Garrett. Mistaking O'Folliard for the Kid, Garrett's men opened fire killing O'Folliard, while Billy and the others escaped.

Three days later, Garett's Posse cornered Billy and his outlaws at a spot called "Stinking Springs". They killed Bowdre and captured the others. On 15.04.1881, Billy the Kid was sentenced to hang but escaped 13 days later killing two deputies.

On 14.07.1881, Garett visited Fort Sumner to question  a friend of the Kid's about his whereabouts and learnt that he was staying with a common friend Pedro Menard Maxwell. Around midnight Garett went to Maxwell's house ' The Kid woke up and repeated ly questioned who was standing in the shadows and did not recognise the man standing in the shadows. Garett replied by shooting him twice - the first shot hit the Kid in the chest while the second shot missed killing him.
