The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have begun a new series of coins which focusses on the "Great Biodiversity of Insects", we share the planet with. 

The Header/Banner is titled "GREEN HAY GRASSHOPPER" at the top, with the Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel coin presented against a background representation of a Green Hay Grasshopper.

Titled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the Coin Series will feature the "Big Four", which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to. 

Insects have lived and evolved on Earth since the first dinosaurs around 480 million years ago. 

They owe their great biodiversity to co-evolution with flowering plants, more than 75 percent of which are pollinated by insects. 

Insects inhabit all terrestrial and freshwater habitats except the open oceans and perform important functions in all ecosystems. 

Many insects are considered pests by humans, especially in urban habitats but, in truth, humans also owe their existence to the many species of insects, especially those whose function is to pollenate countless plants and sources of agriculture. 

The native insect world is not only an indispensable part of the fauna in Germany - but this is also true for all of Europe and, of course, the rest of the world.  

The Fourth coin in this fascinating Numismatic Series entitled “Wonderful World of Insects,” has been released which highlights the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with.  

The Green Hay Grasshopper:

The sixth coin in the 5-euro colour print series "Wonderland Insects" highlights the "Green Hay Grasshopper, the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with. 

The Green Gray Grasshopper is an insect particularly striking features that inclede a distinctive, deep green colouring and its head, said to resemble that of a horse.

This species which is one of the 80 inhabiting Germany and parts of Switzerland is the largest species of grasshopper measuring 40.00 mm (or 1.6 inches) in length.

The females are slightly larger than the males which in addition to their smaller size are known for their ability to attract a mate with their "song".

This unusual but loud sound is created when sexually mature males rub together their forewings, the resulting sound can be heard up to 150 metres or nearly 500 feet away.

Responsive females will lay their eggs at the beginning of spring and towards the end of April, hundreds of tiny wingless grasshoppers hatch and shed their skin several times untiol they are fully grown.

Their habitat includes bushes, meadows and forest edges with vegetation at least 30.00 cm of one foot high.

The Green Hay Horse can easily be spotted in home gardens, flying around with ease an d precision. However, they move only when startled and it is this typical startling which gives these grasshoppers their name.

The Coins:

The Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) coin placed side-by-side

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin is designed by Patrick Niesel and includes a female green hay horse in full colour shown sitting on a leaf in their preferred habitat.

Below the primary design is the text "GRUNES HEUPFERD" placed along the lower periphery.

Digital printing is applied to the design, which includes vivid colours to highlight the design. 

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin which is common for all Coins in the Series, features a stylised Eagle in the centre with the name of the issuing country - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" placed directly above along the edge. 

The denomination "5 EURO" is just under the name of the issuing country. 

Also incorporated into the design are twelve stars below the eagle, which represent the European Union, and are arranged along the lower edge. 

The mintmark "D" is seen between the second and third star representing the Berlin Mint, and the year of issue "2023" is seen between the ninth and tenth star. 

The incused inscription on the edge of the coin reads "WONDERWELT INSECTEN" (“Wonderful World of Insects”).  

The remaining six coins will be released, with four coins each in 2023 and 2024, and will include nine coins in all:
