THE LANGUAGES OF FLOWERS 10 EURO COIN SERIES:

Whether to convey feelings of love, desire and friendship, congratulations and condolence, declarations of intent and even forbidden and unspeakable things, flowers have been used as a form of language throughout recorded history, each country and culture with its own version.

The "Language of Flowers Coin Series" brings this age-old custom back to life and discusses the meanings, folklore, properties and uses of seven well-known flowers.

The messages conveyed by those flowers are inspirational, so too is the technology used to bring nature to life on the coins.

None of the principal flower images in the series is based on a drawing or illustration: the starting point of every coin design is a real flower grown in the garden, which is then pressed using a special technique that captures the flower in its natural state.

Opening with the rose, the series continues with the dandelion, marigold, forget-me-not, chamomile, peony and violet.

2021 The Rose – Love and desire

2022 The Dandelion – A wish come true

2022 The Marigold – Positivity and patience

2023 The Forget-me-not – Remember me

2023 The Chamomile – Strength in difficult situations

2024 The Peony – Good fortune and happiness

2024 The Violet – Loyalty and devotion

The Austrian Mint has brought out the third coin in its innovative “The Language of Flowers Coin Series”, with the latest design featuring the Marigold Flower

The giving and receiving of a floral gift is the focus of this Coin Series launched last year and brings this age-old custom back to life by discussing the meanings, folklore, properties, and uses of seven well-known flowers.

About Marigolds:

As marigolds turn their heads to follow the trajectory of the sun from East to West, they suggest things are moving forward.

Combined with their bright colours, this has led to meanings of joy, gratitude, warmth, affection, peace, protection, contentment and understanding.

It is little wonder that some people refer to the Marigold flower as ‘the Sunshine Herb’.

Marigolds encompass numerous plants from entirely different species, the two most common being Calendula and Tagetes

They both belong to the Asteraceae family, are easily mistaken for one another and have many common properties.

Conveniently, the two species also have the same basic meanings in the language of flowers, many of which focus on positivity and patience. With their golden hues and positive energy, marigolds are said to bring light into any situation and have the ability to illuminate and guide us when faced with challenges.

Their strong connection with the sun means that marigolds are also associated with heat, passion, sex and love. Apparently, both Calendula and Tagetes can be used in spells relating to passion, creativity and warmth and have also been used in love potions and spells to maintain devotion for the long term.

Marigolds also have multiple culinary uses and health benefits, and these cheerful, exceptionally long-flowering and easy-to-grow flowers are perfect for brightening our gardens and homes.

The Coin:

On the Obverse of the 10 Euro Silver and Copper Coins the Marigold is delicately illustrated, with a front-facing young woman, eyes closed, holding a long-stemmed marigold in her left hand, bringing it up closer to her face.

She is surrounded by blooms of marigolds and butterflies in her hair. The denominational value of "10 EURO" and the country "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH", along with the year of issue "2022", are engraved along the lower edge.

On the Reverse of the 10 Euro Silver and Copper Coins are featured an imprint of two long-stemmed real marigolds centred.

As part of the design process in replicating flowers, none of the principal flower images in the series is based on any particular drawing or illustration
