The Obverse and Reverse of the Coin Card containing the Uncirculated 20c (Cents) Coin released by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) featuring the cover of the book by Graeme Base on the Reverse
This is the first release in a new Coin Series commenced by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) that will celebrate a different classic Australian children’s book each year.
The Royal Australian Mint has partnered with the Children’s Book Council of Australia to release this coin, the first of a new series.
The Cover of the Book titled - "Animalia" by Graeme Base
Animalia is a classic Australian children’s book, written and illustrated by Graeme Base.
It was originally published in 1986, followed by a tenth anniversary edition in 1996, and a 25th Anniversary edition in 2012.
Over four million copies have been sold worldwide.
A special numbered and signed anniversary edition was also published in 1996, with an embossed gold jacket.
More about Animalia:
Animalia is an alliterative alphabet book and contains twenty-six illustrations, one for each letter of the alphabet.
Each illustration features an animal from the animal kingdom (A is for alligator and armadillo, B is for butterfly, etc.) along with a short poem utilizing the letter of the page for many of the words.
The illustrations contain many other objects beginning with that letter that the reader can try to identify.
As an additional challenge, the author has hidden a picture of himself as a child in every picture.
There are some of the things in each picture that are truly different (the alligator in the "A" section is wearing an apron featuring the alphabet, which the book is about, and this section also features the author's home country, Australia).
The Coin:
Celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2021, the much-loved book has now been captured on a coloured 20 cent coin.
The Reverse of the 20 Cents Coloured Uncirculated Coin features the cover of the original book published in 1986.
Launched in the lead up to "2021 Book Week", the coin promotes the importance of reading.
The Obverse of the 20 Cents Coloured Uncirculated Coin depicts a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "JC" appear on the Queen's shoulder.
The inscriptions on this face are - "ELIZABETH II. AUSTRALIA. 2021".
