The Header/Banner depicts the Reverse of the Gold and silver Bullion Coins against a background image of the "SUPER PIT GOLD MINE". The inscriptions are "SUPER PIT AUSTRALIA" (on top right) and "THE PERTH MINT" (on bottom left)
The Perth Mint has released new Gold and Silver Bullion Quality Coins which feature one of the world’s most prolific mines, in terms of gold production.
The "Fiminston Open Pit", (colloquially known as the "Super Pit"), was Australia's largest open cut gold mine until 2016 when it was surpassed by the Newmont Boddington Gold Mine also in Western Australia.
The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the South-east edge of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The pit is oblong in plan view and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and over 600 metres deep.
Originally consisting of a large number of underground mines, including the Paringa, Oroya, Brown Hill, Chaffers, and Hainault mines, consolidation into a single open pit mine was first attempted by Alan Bond, but he was unable to complete the task.
The "Fiminston Open Pit" was eventually created in 1989 by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, a 50:50 corporate joint venture between Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy Mining subsidiary).
The Fiminston Open Pit is presently, owned by Northern Star Resources.
The mine produces around 500,000 troy ounces of gold, and employs around 1,100-1,200 employees and contractors directly on site.
The Bullion Coins:
Gold from the mine was segregated throughout the refining and minting processes at the Perth Mint, ensuring that the finished product is 100% sourced from the iconic site.
Each gold coin includes an authentication feature on the Reverse in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
The inscription - "SUPER PIT AUSTRALIA" is seen above the primary design with the year of issue - "2022", "1oz 9999 GOLD" or "9999 SILVER".
The Reverse also incorporates the Perth Mint’s "P" mintmark on the right side just above the Komatsu model 8000 excavator.
The Obverse of the 100 (One Hundred Dollars - AUS) Gold and $1 (One Dollar -AUS) Silver versions depict a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark.
The coins’ denomination of "100 DOLLARS (gold)" or "1 DOLLAR (silver)", is inscribed beneath the Queen’s image.
The Coin has been issued in two variants: $100 Gold and $1 Silver:
