The Mighty Bison:

The mighty bison is featured on this classically styled, classically engraved portrait, issued by The Royal Canadian Mint, which has released new silver Proof coins which showcase one of the country’s most distinctive species of wildlife synonymous with the great outdoors and western prairies of the land known as the Great White North.

A grassland icon stands tall in this superbly engraved wildlife portrait, which captures the majesty of the species and its historic habitat. An inspiring emblem of strength, the "Plains Bison" ("Bison bison bison") that once dominated the vast Canadian prairie continues to be a species of great historical and cultural importance in Canada.

Two subspecies are found in Canada -

The "Plains Bison" and the "Wood Bison". The Wood Bison is heavier and has a more distinctive shoulder hump, while the plains bison is lighter in colour and has a stockier build -

- The "Wood Bison" ("Bison bison athabascae") or "Mountain bison" (often called the "wood buffalo" or "mountain buffalo"), is a distinct northern subspecies or ecotype of the American bison

Its original range included much of the boreal forest regions of Alaska, Yukon, western Northwest Territories, northeastern British Columbia, northern Alberta, and northwestern Saskatchewan.

- The "Plains Bison" ("Bison bison bison") is one of two subspecies/ecotypes of the American bison, the other being the wood bison.

A natural population of Plains Bison survives in "Yellowstone National Park" (the Yellowstone Park bison herd consists of an estimated 4,800 - 5,000 bison) and multiple smaller reintroduced herds of bison in many places in the United States as well as southern portions of the Canadian Prairies.

A majestic bison in the wild, leaves one awe-struck by the imposing stature and domineering nature of the bulls. There is no doubt that these are not animals to be trifled with

The terms terms "buffalo" and "bison" are often used interchangeably, but scientifically speaking, they’re two different species - bison are indigenous to North America and Europe, while buffalo are found in Africa (cape buffalo) and Asia (water buffalo).

The Coin:

The Obverse and Reverse of the $30 Silver Coin, placed side-by-side

The Reverse of the $30 (Thirty Dollars - CAN) Silver Proof Coin, features a side-view portrait of two plains bison in their grassland habitat during the harsh winter months.

Two males (members of a bachelor group) are positioned in a way that best showcases their physical features, with one bull standing at the top of a knoll and the other below facing the opposite direction.

On this face of the Coin, multiple frostings add a sense of depth and create a striking contrast between the different design elements, resulting in a more realistic portrait of the bison and its environment.

The Obverse of the $30 (Thirty Dollars -CAN) Silver Proof Coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with a background wave pattern representing a sense of movement, like wind sweeping across the landscape.

The Coin's denomination - "30 DOLLARS" (is placed on the lower periphery). On the outer periphery is the inscription - "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REGINA".
