The National Bank of Ukraine has issued a Commemorative Collector's Banknote of 100 Hryvnia denomination on 17.12.2018 to celebrate the 100th Anniversaries of both the Ukrainian Revolution (1917-1921) and the introduction of the first Banknotes of an independent Ukraine (2017).

A third Anniversary dates from the spring of 1918, when the Ukrainian government decided to change the name of its domestic currency from "roubles" to "Hryvnia". This was necessary to emphasize the continuity of national traditions dating to  the time of Kievan Rus, the mostly East Slavic State that was centred in Kiev from the 9th to 12th Centuries AD.

The Banknote, while modern in its printing techniques presents a retro look in its appearance.

The Front of the 100 Hryvnia Banknote is seen here placed against a background impression of the Back of the Banknote.
The Front face of the 100 Hryvnia Banknote presents the denomination of the Banknote within a wreath of flowers, fruits, vegetables and wheat - signifying prosperity. There is a trident symbol within the wreath.

At left is a woman wearing a national costume with a wheat sheaf and a sickle in her hand. At right is a man in an apron leaning on a large hammer wrapped in laurel - both together symbolising agricultural cultivation and industrial development, which are leading the nation forward.
On the Back of the 100 Hryvnia Banknote are presented inscriptions and the denomination of the Banknote, which appear below another wreath of plants and fruit suspended from a pair of ornate columns. A trident in a laurel wreath is in the top centre.

The Watermark in the Banknote is also a trident. Stylised images of the Ukrainian flags present a yellow-blueish glow, when viewed under ultra-violet light.

The Size of the Commemorative Banknote is 170 mm x 80 mm. The Print Run for this Commemorative Banknote has a maximum limit of 100,000 pieces.

The National Bank of Ukraine has clarified that this Banknote has been issued as a "souvenir" and not as a "general circulation/payment instrument".

Interestingly, the first Ukrainian currency had a short life-span, as on 12.12.1922, Ukraine became a part of the then USSR and came to be known as the "Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic".
