909) Leisure Time - Memories: From the website of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh: Setting up/establishing of the Physiology Department and the new Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) Campus by my late father Dr. J.N. Prasad:

I happened to visit the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) website for some material for a post which I was working on and I was pleasantly surprised to find the following information about the Physiology Department, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh.

My father Dr. J.N. Prasad was the first Senior Professor/Chairman to join the JNMC on 2nd October 1962 and the Medical College traces its date of establishment from the date of his joining.

The Department of Physiology which he headed was, in fact the first Department to be set up in the newly envisaged Medical College.

Working from the old Physics Department building of the AMU, he was instrumental in planning the layout of the new Medical College Campus, the medical equipment, teaching facilities etc. I remember that there were extensive meetings with the architects, the doctors of the JNMC, the equipment suppliers. Everything was meticulously planned, including the Onion domes, which are an integral part of Muslim architecture, the Car Parking areas et al.

He even went on to officiate as the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University for some time.

The following excerpt is taken from the Aligarh Muslim University website:

"The Department of Physiology is the primary department to have been started when J.N. Medical College came into existence on 2nd October 1962. Prof. J.N. Prasad, M.D. (Physiology), M.S. (OPhth) joined the department as Chairman along with Dr. Wajihul Hasan, MBBS as Demonstrator. Physiology Department is shifted to present building in June 1971 from the old Department of Physice of the Aligarh Muslim University.

150 students in MBBS and 40 BDS students are admitted every year since 1996 and are undergoing teaching/training of Physiology. MD and PhD (Physiology) was started in 1973. Every year 5 Post Graduate students are admitted. The degree of MBBS and MD Physiology is recognised by the Medical Council of India.

There are three laboratories namely Human, Haematology and Mammalian/Amphibian for the UG and PG students as recommended by the Medical Council of India. The main field of research in the department is on clinical physiology. The Department has produced one Ph.D (Physiology) and 44 MD (Physiology) since 1973.

The Faculty members are actively engaged in research work and have published more than 250 papers in National and International journals. Faculty of the department has received National level awards in cardiovascular and Medical Education.

Many teachers are honoured by International fellowship of different countries to attend conferences and workshops related to Physiology and Medical Education.

Department also provides Neurophysiological support to the hospital patients in the form of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), Electromyography (EMG) and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP).

The Department has recently started Computer Assisted Amphibian Lab (CAAL), inaugurated by Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zamiruddin Shah."

"DEAR RAJIV, Your Dad's excruciating days in shaping AMU and making it a great center of learning, it's memory has been well revived by his worthy son, who too spend long hours finding out what his GREAT DAD did, when he is no more. DAD was definitely a tough nut to crack and very hard headed. He could accomplish anything, when we just could not bear the times. It's really worth remembering him and his achievements, which lay buried in AMU."
