903) American Flamingo, British Virgin Islands: The first $1 Coin in a six-coin series on Flamingos brought out by Pobjoy Mint, UK in 01/2019:



Pobjoy Mint, UK has released the first coin in the series of coins, on behalf of the British Virgin Islands, which feature this spectacular bird - the Flamingo.

The first coin of the set concentrates on the American Flamingo which is a large species also known as the Caribbean Flamingo.

The banner as seen on the Pobjoy Mint website, depicts a Caribbean/American Flamingo. The coin's Obverse and Reverse images are placed against the background of the Flamingo image

The term "Flamingo" comes from the Portuguese/Spanish word "flamengo", which means "flame coloured and is a particularly apt term for this bird  with its pink or reddish colour coming from carotenoids in their diet of animal or plant plankton.

Flamingos are very social birds who live in colonies which can number in the thousands. They are often seen standing on one leg while the other is tucked beneath their bodies.

There are six existing flamingo species which are recognised by most sources and it is these six species which will feature in this coin series.

The coin:

The Reverse of the $1 coin shows an adult American Flamingo standing on one leg with a flock of flamingos in the background.

The coin has been minted in Virenium - a metal developed by the Pobjoy Mint - which is light gold in colour. The coin displays the main flamingo engraving in full colour which shows off its magnificent plumage to perfection.

The Obverse of the $1 coin shows an image of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. It isan exclusive representation of the Queen's effigy developed by the Pobjoy Mint, UK.
