About the Giant Gold Nugget - "Little Hero":
Discovered in 1890 by a prospecting party near Marble Bar in Western Australia’s arid northwest, the once-in-a-lifetime prize weighed in at a staggering 333 ounces.
The giant nugget, which at the current spot price of gold would net more than U.S. $586,000, sparked significant public excitement when it was first discovered.
It was one of the first large nuggets found in the State of Western Australia, and when the find was made public, it soon sparked off a gold rush of prospectors to the Western coast of Australia.
The nugget featured in a display at the Union Bank in Perth before finally being melted and refined.
The Coin:
The Reverse of the Gold $100 (One Hundred Dollars - AUD) and Silver $1 (One Dollar - AUD) Bullion Coins depicts a design created by craftsman Stuart Devlin when the range was introduced in 1986, it was featured on the 1/10th-ounce and is now reprised for the 2022 range.Devlin’s "Little Hero is shown on a pattern of radial lines with the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN NUGGET" placed above along the edge along with "LITTLE HERO 1890" superimposed over the radial lines below.
Along the lower edge is the year of issue - "2022", followed by the coin’s weight, fineness, and metal.
The Perth Mint’s "P" mintmark is placed to the right near the edge, and an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter only detectable with a magnifying glass is incorporated into the design for both gold and silver strikes.
The Obverse of the Gold $100 (One Hundred Dollars - AUD) and Silver $1 (One Dollar - AUD) depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Jody Clark. The denomination "100 DOLLARS" (Gold) or 1 DOLLAR (Silver) is placed below the Queen’s image.
