This is the second release in a new Coin Series commenced by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) that will celebrate a different classic Australian children’s book, reading and story-telling each year.
The Royal Australian Mint has partnered with the Children’s Book Council of Australia to release this coin, the second of this popular series.
"Diary of a Wombat" is a 2002 award-winning picture book written by Jackie French and illustrated by Bruce Whatley.
It is the first in the Shaggy Gully books, and is one of the most popular of French's works. It was first published 20 years ago, and is the second coin in the series.
Wombats are cuddly-looking, slow-moving Australian animals. Their favorite activities are eating, sleeping, and digging holes. Here, in the words of one unusually articulate wombat, is the tongue-in-cheek account of a busy week; eating, sleeping, digging holes . . . and training its new neighbors, a family of humans, to produce treats on demand.
This entertaining book, with its brief, humorous text and hilarious illustrations, will endear the wombat to young children, who may recognize in the determined furry creature some qualities that they share.
The Coin:
This year, "The Diary of a Wombat" celebrates 20 years since it was first published.
This beautifully designed coin is a glimpse into the life of a very busy wombat.
The Reverse of the 20 Cents Coloured Uncirculated and Gold plated Coins feature a right facing wombat eating carrots growing in a carrot patch of a house garden. The inscriptions are - "DIARY OF A WOMBAT. 20th ANNIVERSARY".
The Obverse of the 20 Cents Coloured Uncirculated and Gold plated Coins depicts a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "JC" appear on the Queen's shoulder.
The inscriptions on this face are - "ELIZABETH II. AUSTRALIA. 2022".
