Netherlands: About Experience Nature- Leuvenumse Forest:
Leuvenum Woods, Hulshorsterzand and Leuvenhorst estate together form the Leuvenum Woods Nature Reserve.
This contiguous area is located in the North-western part of the Veluwe in the province of Gelderland.
Leuvenum Woods have been owned by Natuurmonumenten for over 100 years, while the other areas came into the possession of Natuurmonumenten later.
The three areas together cover about 2,300 hectares and consist mainly of forests and a smaller part of heathland and sand drifts.
There are beautiful old deciduous forests along the Hierdensche and Leuvenum Brook, with the longest brook running 17.00 km through the Veluwe. In marshy spots, there are groves with black alders, willows and elms.
There is a lot of wildlife in the area, including boars, red deer, roe deer, badgers, pine martens, foxes and the occasional wolf.
It is the breeding ground for many different species of birds, including the nightjar, wood warbler and firecrest.
The kingfisher and osprey are also found there. Overgrown with heather and crowberry, the moors are managed using a sheep herd.
In recent years, Natuurmonumenten has restored Hulshorsterzand to its former glory as a sand drift area with the help of many volunteers. The area was previously overgrown with conifers.
As a result, animals and plants that had previously disappeared have now returned. Currently, three times as many pairs of the rare nightjar are breeding and twice as many species of bee are flying around.
