Description:
We all know the saying “Free as a bird (in the sky)”. This means that one free to do as one pleases. A great goal to strive for, but unfortunately this was not the case for the birds themselves a century ago. Unprotected and without rights, they were exposed to everyone's persecution.
In the Netherlands there is "The National Garden Birdcount" while in Belgium there is "The Great Birdweekend", but 100 years ago this was very different.
Birds weren’t spotted, they were hunted, using horrible catching methods. In those times, many winged animals died or got captured.
In 1922, Belgium started to unite for violence against birds. From that point, birds went from ‘outlaws’ to ‘free as a bird’!
Bird Protection in Belgium:
Bird catching almost seemed like a national sport in the last century.
The winged animals were caught for their feathers, ended up on food table-plates or had to participate in finch singing competitions etc. The way they were captured was also downright brutal, resulting in a certain death.
Around 1922 people in Belgium started to unite to put an end to the abuse against birds.
Gradually, Belgians developed a conscience for birds’ welfare and legislation and regulations were put in place, which have ensured a more humane treatment of birds. After all, the bird is good for people and the environment!
This special coin celebrates 100 years Bird protection:
The Royal Mint of Belgium has released a 2.50 Euro Coin, themed ‘100 years of Bird Protection in Belgium’.
The 2.5 Euro Coin has been minted in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU)-quality and is being issued in two language-versions - French and Dutch.
The coin-card design shows birds that occur in Belgium in a pseudoscientific nostalgic way. This ambience takes one back to roughly 100 years ago, when the interest in birds developed from hunt to appreciation and wonder.
On the Reverse of the 2 1/2 (Two and a Half Euro) Brass Coin is depicted a male European Robin: this bird lives in Belgium all year round and is a symbol of hope for many.
The inscriptions on the outer periphery are - "VOGELBESCHERMING IN BELGIE" (" Bird Preservation in Belgium"). "PROTECTION DES OISEAUX en BELGIQUE" ("Protection of Birds in Belgium"). In the centre is engraved - "100 JAAR ANS" ("100 Year Anniversary").
The Obverse of the 2 1/2 (Two and a Half Euro) Coin is common to all Euro Coins and is inscribed "BE (Belgium) EURO. 2022".
