35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ERASMUS PROGRAMME:

In 2022, the countries of the EU Economic and Monetary Union are celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the founding of the Erasmus Programme with the issue of a special 2 Euro Erasmus Coin.

Approved by the European Council of Ministers in 1987, the Erasmus Programme promotes cultural, social and academic exchanges between European students.

About Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam:

The programme is named after the Dutch philosopher, theologian, Renaissance Humanist and Catholic monk.

Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Renaissance cosmopolitan who worked in many European countries.

He passed away in Basel almost half a millennium ago, but is still considered an important humanist, philologist, church reformer and pioneering spirit of the Enlightenment.

In 1509, he wrote his most famous work, "In Praise of Folly", a satire that looks at the many faces of human ignorance.

Erasmus, along with his good friend Thomas More, became one of the main figures of European intellectual life during the Renaissance.

Known for his satire, Erasmus urged internal reform of the Catholic Church. He encouraged a recovery of the Catholic Patristic tradition against what he considered to be contemporary abuses of the Sacraments and certain excessive devotional practices

Erasmus travelled widely across Europe and he was a pioneer of the European Republic of Letters. He was one of the first intellectuals to use as a vehicle of diffusion of his ideas a path-breaking technology, namely the movable type and spent a lot of his time inside printing workshops.

He famously clashed with Protestant revolutionary Martin Luther on the subject of free will.

About the ERASMUS Programme:

"ERASMUS" is a backronym meaning "European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students"

The Erasmus Programme is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme established in 1987.

"Erasmus+", or "Erasmus Plus", is the new programme combining all the EU's current schemes for education, training, youth and sport, which was started in January 2014.

In 1989 the Erasmus Bureau invited 32 former Erasmus students for an evaluation meeting in Ghent, Belgium.

The lack of peer-to-peer support was singled out as a major issue, but it was also a driving force behind the creation of the Erasmus Student Network

The organization supports students from Erasmus programme and other bilateral agreement and cooperates with national agencies in order to help international students.

At present, the Erasmus Student Network consists of 534 local associations ("sections") in 42 countries and has more than 15,000 volunteers across Europe.

The programme has promoted the mobility of more than 4.00 million students within the European community. More than 5,000 higher education institutions from 38 countries are participating in the project.

The Commemorative Coin:

In its brass core, the special 2 Euro Coin features a representation of the famous portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam painted by Hans Holbein the Younger in 1523.

Behind Erasmus is a network symbolising intellectual and cultural exchange between students from different nations.

The inscriptions are - "1987-2022. ERASMUS PROGRAMM. REPUBLIK OSTERREICH". On the outer periphery are the 13 Stars representing the European Union (EU).

The Common Reverse to all Euro Coins features a map of Europe.

The roll of 25 pieces is available at the Coins’ joint nominal value of 50 Euros.

The specifications of the 2 Euro Coin are:
