The painting titled "Winter" by Vilhems Purvītis which has been taken on the coin issued by the Latvijas Banka celebrating his 150th Birth Anniversary (1872-2022)

On 26.05.2022, Latvijas Banka (Bank of Latvia) has issued a silver collector coin celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of the painter/artist - "Vilhelms Purvītis".

The Collector Coin of 5 Euro

About Vilhelms Purvītis:

Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945) ranks among the most remarkable painters representing the period from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, and he was among the most prominent founders of the Latvian National Museum of Art and the Art Academy of Latvia

He is the founder and modernizer of Latvian landscape painting. He was one of the key figures of Latvian visual art in the first half of the 20th century. At the turn of the century, this painter painted spring landscapes. He was noticed in St. Petersburg, Paris and other European art centers.

He is also one of the architects of cultural policy in Latvia, as the first rector of the Latvian Academy of Arts and head of the Master Class of landscape painting. He was also director of the prestigious Riga City Art Museum (now the Latvian National Art Museum), creator of the national art collection and organizer of international exhibitions.

Vilhelms Purvītis can also be considered as an  "ambassador of Latvian art" - his name had already crossed Latvia's borders during his lifetime, his works were collected and awarded prizes at foreign exhibitions, and he himself was active in organising Latvian art exhibitions in European cities.

To mark the occasion, the Latvian National Museum of Art  also launched an exhibition titled "PURVĪTIS" on 28.05.2022

The Coin:

This collector coin has been issued at a time when Latvia is celebrating the artist's 150th Birth Anniversary by organising a range of events.

The designer of the coin titled - "Vilhelms Purvītis" is Frančeska Kirke.

The coin created by the artist interprets elements of the painting "Winter" by Vilhelms Purvītis - the lacy majestic birch trees, glittering water of the unfrozen lake and overcast winter sky. The design transfers these elements to the silver coin in an elegant manner, using frosting, texture and mirror surface of varying intensity.

On the Obverse of the Silver €5 (Five Euro) Coin is presented reproduction of the painting “Winter” by Vilhelms Purvītis, in colour print.

On the Reverse of the Silver €5 (Five Euro) Coin is seen the plaster model of the painting “Winter” by Vilhelms Purvītis with several types of surfaces, worked in different ways (more or less intensified glaze effect).

The inscriptions “5 EURO” and “VILHELMS PURVĪTIS” are in semi circles on the left along the upper edge of the obverse.
