2405) Yuwana (or the "Green Iguana"), Aruba: Fifth Coin in the Series minted by The Royal Dutch Mint (RDM) on behalf of Aruba: A 5 Florin Silver Prooflike Coin features this animal: Year of Coin issue: 2021:
After the Blenchi (hummingbird - 2020), Prikichi (brown-throated parakeet - 2017), Soldachi (hermit crab - 2018) and Turtuga (green sea turtle - 2019), the next commemorative coin in the Aruban series features - the "Yuwana" (also known as the "green iguana" -2021).
On the Aruban commemorative coin of the year 2021 is seen the "green iguana", or “Yuwana” in Papiamento.
In addition to the striking colour of the Yuwana, one can recognize the animal by the dewlap, the scale on the cheek and the row of elongated scales running from the head to the tail.
Yuwanas are born climbers, but they can also swim and dive like the best. Their diet consists mainly of leaves and fruits. They know how to choose the leaves that contain the most nutrients.
The biggest threat to the Yuwana is humans - their meat is a delicacy in the soup and so are their eggs. This has given the Yuwana the status of an endangered species. In Aruba it is by law forbidden to hunt the Yuwana.
The special Aruban animal is now immortalised on this coloured commemorative coin.
The Coin:
On the Reverse of the 5 Florin Silver Prooflike commemorative coin issued in 2021 is depicted the green iguana, or “Yuwana” in Papiamento in its natural habitat.
