2324) "HMS Formidable", British Virgin Islands (BVI), A British Overseas Territory (BOT): "Tall Ships Coin Series": Sixth $1 (One Dollar) Coin issued by the Pobjoy Mint, UK struck in Virenium, a Base Metal Alloy patented by the Mint: Date of Coin issue: 12.05.2022:
The Treasury of the British Virgin Islands will release on 12.05.2022, the sixth coin in their current collector’s series entitled “Tall Ships,” featuring many of the ships that during their lifetime were connected to the British Virgin Islands.
The sixth coin in the collection features Royal Navy ship "HMS Formidable", a 98-gun man-of-war under the command of the British Royal Navy.
HMS Formidable was launched on 20.08.1777, at Chatham and it is mostly known for her participation in the Battle of the Saintes, an important naval battle in the Caribbean between the British and the French during the American Revolutionary War.
The design on the coin shows a side image of the sailing ship. The coin is available in Virenium®, a metal developed by Pobjoy Mint which is light gold in color.
In 1782, HMS Formidable served as Admiral George Brydges Rodney’s flagship at the Battle of the Saintes and was accompanied by three 98-gun ships - "HMS Barfleur", "HMS Prince George" and "HMS Duke", as well as, the 90-gun HMS Namur.
Her most important action was the breaking of the French line in the middle of the battle, and the final pursuit of the “Ville de Paris”.
In all, she fired 80 broadsides during the battle, totalling 35 tons of shots.
Her losses were relatively light given both the ferocity of the battle and the huge French losses - 14 killed and 39 wounded.
After the Battle, she ended up in Port Royal Jamaica and it wasn’t until 1813 that she was broken up.
The Coin:
The $1 coins have been minted by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the treasury of the British Virgin Islands.
Struck in virenium, this is Pobjoy Mint’s patented base metal alloy of light golden colour in appearance comprised of 81% copper, 10% zinc, and 9% nickel.
On the Reverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Coin features an artist’s depiction of the ship "HMS FORMIDABLE" during the naval battle of Chatham firing broadsides on her left flank (port-side) at enemy ships of the French navy.
The Obverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by the Pobjoy Mint which is an exclusive design. The year of issue "2022" appears on this face. The peripheral inscriptions are - "BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. QUEEN ELIZABETH II. 2022
