About Research, Innovation, Technology in Norway:

i) Norwegian ground-penetrating radar on Mars:

The ground-penetrating RIMFAX radar is one of the seven scientific instruments on board NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021. 

RIMFAX's task is to analyse the different geological strata to determine where it is best to take sediment samples. RIMFAX provides the scientists with continuous pictures of the geological structure under Perseverance as it moves and important information about which areas are interesting to study in more detail.

 An important mission is to find sedimentary layers where there may have been water and thus potential conditions for life. 

RIMFAX was developed and produced entirely by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), with support from Norwegian industry.

ii) HUGIN explores deep ocean waters:

The HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle operates independently without a physical connection to a support ship

It can descend to a depth of 6,000 metres and provides valuable data about the deep-ocean environment and seabed conditions. 

This technology is particularly important for ensuring that offshore operations are performed and natural resources are used in a sustainable and safe manner. 

For these purposes, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) teamed with the Royal Norwegian Navy and Kongsberg Maritime to develop HUGIN

It can interpret data and adapt its operational pattern to meet the objectives of missions in the best possible way. HUGIN has become an export success in recent years.

iii) John Ugelstad Birth Centenary (1921-2021): Groundbreaking beads for medicine and technology:

John Ugelstad (1921-1997) was a Professor of Chemistry at the then Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH, now NTNU) and his scientific work gained him fame in scientific circles around the world

He was the first person to succeed in making spherical microscopic beads of exactly the same size. These tiny beads have come to play a vital role in different medical diagnostics and treatments

The beads are typically about 0.001-0.1 mm in diameter. They can be modified and made superparamagnetic. 

They are used in various forms of cancer treatment and are important in the work with AIDS, bacteriology and DNA technology

The beads were put into use in the treatment of bone marrow cancer as early as 1983

The method involves removing some of the patient’s bone marrow and infusing it with the magnetic beads, which attract and bind the cancer cells. The cancer cells are magnetically pulled out and the clean bone marrow is then returned to the patient. 

The beads, or Ugelstad particles, have become the gold standard in biomagnetic separation, called Dynabeads, and they are produced in Lillestrøm.

 A research laboratory named after Professor Ugelstad was founded at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim in 2002.
