Old Town of Cáceres, Spain:

The following information is excerpted from a Book in my personal library titled - "Treasures of the World - a UNESCO publication on World Heritage Sites":

" Caceres is an outstanding example of a feudal city that developed after the conflicts between the Christians and the Moors. Its history is reflected in its architecture, which is a blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance styles.

Originally a Roman city, the Islamic Almohads built remarkable fortifications which completely changed the appearance of the Roman walls.

Of the thirty or so towers from the Muslim period, the "Torre del Bujaco" is the most famous. The street pattern, with winding backstreets that open on tiny squares, also dates from this period.

After the Reconquista, the city became the stage for power struggles between rival clans and fortified houses dotted the landscape.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, noble pride was demonstrated by adding richly decorated coats of arms to the front of houses and by building many defensive towers.

When the Spanish adventurers returned from America in the sixteenth century, new palaces were constructed - "Palacio Godoy", built by a newly-rich conquistador and "Palacio de los Toledo-Moctezuma", built in the second half of the sixteenth century, for the grandson of Moctezuma II, the Aztec ruler when Cortes reached Mexico".

More on Cáceres:

Since 1986, Cáceres has held the title of World Heritage City granted by UNESCO, thus recognising the important historical ensemble in which the testimonies of the different historical periods are mixed.

The city, which has been occupied since prehistoric times, still bears the mark of all its inhabitants in its archaeological remains, traditions and the excellent architecture of the medieval and Renaissance historic quarter.

This diversity allows one to enter the Monumental City through a Roman gate and exit through a Baroque gate; to enter a Jewish quarter as soon as one leaves an Almohad tower or to admire a Mudejar façade, next to a Renaissance palace.

Its historic quarter is impressive for its many palaces, the co-cathedral of Santa María, its two Jewish quarters, churches and well-preserved convents, which have served as an attraction, among other productions, for the filming of series such as "Game of Thrones" or "The Cathedral of the Sea".

The "Arco del Cristo", the "Torre de Bujaco" and the popular Plaza de San Jorge also underline the beauty of Cáceres.

The great buildings of Cáceres were mostly built thanks to the goods generated by the discovery of America.

Although many of its historic buildings have been reconstructed, it is surprising and admirable how well preserved most of them are.

In short, Cáceres is one of Spain's architectural gems, which also offers visitors a host of cultural and gastronomic activities, making a stroll through its streets an unforgettable experience.
