The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have begun a new series of coins which focusses on the "Great Biodiversity of Insects", we share the planet with.
The Header/Banner is titled "WUNDERWELT INSEKTENREICH" ("WONDERFUL WORLD OF INSECTS") at the top, with the Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel coin presented against a background representation of a Rust-red Mason Bee in its hive.
Titled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the Coin Series will feature the "Big Four", which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to.
Insects have lived and evolved on Earth since the first dinosaurs around 480 million years ago.
They owe their great biodiversity to co-evolution with flowering plants, more than 75 percent of which are pollinated by insects.
Insects inhabit all terrestrial and freshwater habitats except the open oceans and perform important functions in all ecosystems.
Many insects are considered pests by humans, especially in urban habitats but, in truth, humans also owe their existence to the many species of insects, especially those whose function is to pollenate countless plants and sources of agriculture.
The native insect world is not only an indispensable part of the fauna in Germany - but this is also true for all of Europe and, of course, the rest of the world.
The Fourth coin in this fascinating Numismatic Series entitled “Wonderful World of Insects,” has been released which highlights the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with.
The Rust-red Mason Bee:
The fourth coin in the 5-euro colour print series "Wonderland Insects" highlights the "Rust red Mason Bee", (Insect of the Year 2019 in Germany), the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with. Mason bee is a name now commonly used for species of bees in the genus Osmia, of the family Megachilidae.
Mason bees are named for their habit of using mud or other "masonry" products in constructing their nests, which are made in naturally occurring gaps such as between cracks in stones or other small dark cavities.
When available, some species preferentially use hollow stems or holes in wood made by wood-boring insects.
Osmia species are frequently metallic green or blue, although many are blackish and at least one rust-red. Most have black ventral scopae which are difficult to notice unless laden with pollen. They have arolia between their claws, unlike Megachile or Anthidium species.
The Rust-red Mason Bee, which is reminiscent of a small bumblebee, is considered a harbinger of spring - as soon as the furry wild bee can be seen, the time of permafrost is over.
It is one of the 700 species of wild bees that live in Central Europe and play an important role within functioning ecosystems, especially as pollinators of wild and cultivated plants.
Due to its nesting behaviour, the rust-red mason bee is often found near human dwellings.
In early spring, it uses cavities in dry stone walls as well as in loess and clay walls, but also in dead wood and loose rock, for its brood nests. Nests have even been found in shutter stoppers, door locks and a wooden flute. The rust-red mason bee also gladly accepts artificial nesting aids made of bamboo, reeds or wood.
Only one generation develops per year. In the spring, the nesting cavities filled with pollen are created, in which the larvae form into adults by August.
In this state, they remain in the closed nest until the following spring, when they gnaw out with their powerful jaws. The male offspring hatch first. As soon as the females hatch, the males wait to mate, and the cycle starts all over again.
The Coins:
The Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) coin placed side-by-side
The Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin is designed by Claudius Riedmiller from Stuttgart and includes the image of the rusty red mason bee shown on a wall surface. The motif of the bee is raised in relief and includes vivid colour. Surrounding the primary design on the outer periphery is the inscription "ROSTROTE MAUERBIENE" (“Rusty Mason Bee”) denoting the insect featured.
Digital printing is applied to the design, which includes vivid colours to highlight the design.
The Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin which is common for all Coins in the Series, features a stylised Eagle in the centre with the name of the issuing country - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" placed directly above along the edge.
The denomination "5 EURO" is just under the name of the issuing country.
Also incorporated into the design are twelve stars below the eagle, which represent the European Union, and are arranged along the lower edge.
The mintmark "D" is seen between the second and third star representing the Berlin Mint, and the year of issue "2023" is seen between the ninth and tenth star.
The incused inscription on the edge of the coin reads "WONDERWELT INSECTEN" (“Wonderful World of Insects”).
The remaining six coins will be released, with four coins each in 2023 and 2024, and will include nine coins in all:
The schedule is as follows:
Banded Demoiselle (09.11.2023)
Green Hayhorse (1st Quarter 2024)
Hoverfly (2nd Quarter 2024)
Stag Beetle (3rd Quarter 2024)

A Coin Album:
A high-quality and elegantly designed Souvenir Coin Album is available as a separate purchase and is an ideal way to store each of the five Euro coloured coins from the “Wonderful World of Insects” Series.
It offers space for all the coins and also includes an informative reference and text narrative in which all further information and interesting facts about the insects in the series can be found with their selected motifs and profiles.
The nine encapsulated coins in the series can be easily inserted in and out of the album.
The booklet in the folder reveals, among other things, why insects are so important for us humans, how we can protect them, but also interesting facts such as which of the insects migrates like migratory birds in late summer to the south and much more worth knowing.
