The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland has issued on 22.09.2022, a €20 Silver Collector Coin for 2022 and which celebrates the 1200th year of the establishment of the Princely Abbey of Corvey.

The Header/Banner shows the Obverse and Reverse of the 20 Euro Silver Coin against a background representation of the interior of the Abbey

Construction and Architecture:

This western work is one of the few Carolingian buildings of its time that has been largely preserved.

Together with the Baroque monastery complex and the nineteenth-century Princely Library, it forms an impressive ensemble of buildings that reflect 1,200 years of Christian and European history.

The Carolingian west work is a separate, superior church made of red Solling sandstone dating from the early days of the Benedictine abbey and built between 873 and 885.

The Abbey enjoys the distinction of not only being the oldest building in Westphalia or Germany, but also the oldest Western structure.

The central tower and flanking side towers, the "tres turres" (or "three towers of Corvey"), were the focal point of the structure from the mid-12th Century until the westwork was rebuilt into the two-tower structure which is still visible today.

As the only Carolingian structure that has survived to this extent, the former monastery and convent were awarded the "UNESCO World Heritage title" in 2014, providing the city with its "first World Heritage Site".

Of particular national importance was one of Corvey’s most famous residents, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Remembered as the author of the German National Anthem, he was working at the Abbey as the ruling duke’s librarian and was buried in the adjacent cemetery upon his death and where his grave can still be visited today.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the €20 Silver Coin design brings out the facets of the 1200-year history of the monastery of Corvey.

It has a clear and ornamental design and includes a great deal of detail and space.

The insightful perspective makes it possible to visualise the important history of the monastery and palace complex.

Above the primary design is the inscription "1200 JAHRE" (meaning "1200 Years") and below is engraved -  "KLOSTER CORVEY" (meaning " Corvey Abbey").

On the Obverse of the €20 Silver Coin is depicted a stylised version of the Federal Eagle in the centre with the issuer "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (meaning "Federal Republic of Germany") placed along the upper edge.

The denomination of the coin "20 EURO", year of issue "2022", and fineness of "SILBER 925" ("meaning "Silver .925") are placed below the eagle.

The mintmark "F" (Stuttgart Mint) is shown to the right.

Also built into the design are 12, five-pointed stars encircling the eagle representing the European Union.

The incused inscription on the edge of the coin reads: "WO DER HIMMEL DIE ERDE BERÜHRT" (“Where Heaven touches Earth”).

The specifications of the Silver Coin are:
