About Road Safety - Safety Belts Keep You Safe:

Slovenia’s National Road Safety Agency runs and coordinates a national preventive campaign called "Safety Belt".

The campaign aims to draw attention to the importance of all passengers in all motor vehicles wearing a safety belt on every journey, even the shortest, and in this way to increase the use of safety belts. The safety belt is, in fact, one of the most important contributions to increased safety for drivers and passengers alike.

Use of the safety belt is required by law, and it is an essential element of safe driving. Safety belts are proven lifesavers.

The strength of one's hands and feet can only keep one in his/her seat in a collision at speeds of up to 7 km/h

Consistent use of safety belts reduces the risk of death by 50% and the risk of serious injury by almost the same amount, while the risk of minor injuries to both driver and passengers is reduced by almost a quarter.

Even so, public awareness of the importance of wearing a safety belt is still too low

Time and again we see evidence from the worst road accidents that the consequences of an accident could be significantly less serious if drivers and passengers used safety belts consistently and without excuses.

That is why the slogan of the national preventive campaign is "Safety belts keep you safe".

It is especially important that drivers ensure that restraint systems are used for children. Children are particularly vulnerable and can suffer serious consequences even in low-speed collisions, so it is the responsibility of every adult to ensure that they are buckled up and transported safely!

All drivers should always make sure that both they and all their passengers are wearing safety belts even on the shortest journeys – no excuses!

The Indian experience:

As per Section 194(B) of the Act, whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers not wearing seat belts shall be punishable with a fine of one thousand rupees

Evidently, although cars are equipped with seat belts, the enforcement for rear seat occupants is virtually absent in India.

Why are seat belts necessary while driving?

It holds the occupants in the seat and prevents them from being thrown out of the vehicle due to force and hitting the dashboard, windshield which can cause serious head injuries or even worse.

A seat belt keeps the occupants of the vehicle inside. “It is clearly a myth that people are better off being thrown clear from the crash”.

A seat belt:

- restrains the strongest parts of the body.

- it spreads out any force from the collision.

- it helps the body to slow down.

- a seat belt also protects one's brain and spinal cord.
