Peru: New silver Proof collector coins released to mark 150 years of Peruvian-Japanese friendship

The Banco Central Reserve del Peru has brought out new Silver Proof Collector Coins, which mark the country’s 150th Anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of Peru and the Empire of Japan.

The Header/Banner showcases the Reverse and Obverse of the Silver Coin minted by Peru. The inscriptions are - "BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU (Central/Reserve Bank of Peru)". Also seen at centre left are the Flags of Peru and Japan. Also inscribed is "150 ANOS - PERU-JAPON" against a background representation of ice-covered stylised mountains with a rising sun  symbolising the emblematic mountains of both countries, Machu Picchu and Mount Fuji.

The document, through which diplomatic relations between the two countries were established, was signed in Tokyo on 21.08.1873.

The launching ceremony of the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and Japan (1873-2023) took place in 02/2023 at the Foreign Affairs Ministry headquarters in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

The event - the first among various commemorative activities to be held this year - was attended by some legislators, members of the Peru-Japan Parliamentary League, senior officials from various State Agencies, Nikkei community representatives, diplomatic corps members, in addition to senior executives of Peruvian and Japanese companies.

The Peruvian deputy minister and the Japanese envoy highlighted the historical relationship between both countries, as well as the interest in continuing to deepen the friendship and cooperation relations. It was stressed that Japan is Peru's fourth-largest trading partner and one of the country's main investors.

The Peruvian diplomat also highlighted the importance of Japan's technical cooperation.

Similarly, the government official underscored the valuable contribution of the Nikkei community in the construction of Peruvian society in aspects such as industry, natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and gastronomy.

On this occasion, both the countries unveiled the commemorative logo for the 150th anniversary and inaugurated a documentary exhibit on the history of the bilateral relationship, highlighting —among others— the exhibition of the "Preliminary Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation" original volume.

The Commemorative Coin:

The Proof-quality coins are produced at the Casa Nacional de Moneda, one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the Americas since 1565, at their facilities in Lima, on behalf of the Banco Central de Reserva Del Peru.

The Reverse of the 1 Sol (Un Sol) Silver Proof Coin depicts an image composed of emblematic mountains of both countries, Machu Picchu and Mount Fuji.

Above and below the stylised depiction are linear elements that evoke the rising sun above the primary design and the Peruvian flag below.

The commemorative inscription - "RELACIONES DIPLOMÁTICAS" is placed along the upper periphery and separated by the Sun element of the Japanese flag.

Just above the linear mountain representation is the numeral "150" along with the two Japanese characters "周 年" denoting “anniversary year.”

Superimposed over the illustration of Mount Fuji are the commemorative years "1873 – 2023".

Placed over Peru’s flag is the additional inscription PERÚ – JAPÓN.

The Obverse of the 1 Sol (Un Sol) Silver Proof Coin features Peru’s National Coat of Arms, which is placed in the centre.

The text "BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU" is placed along the upper periphery.

The denomination of "UN SOL" (One Sol) is seen just under the crest along with the year of issue "2023" and the coins’ specifications - "33.625 g and PLATA 0.925".

The Peruvian Mint’s distinctive mintmark comprising the monogrammed letters “LIMA” is placed just under the crest.

The specifications of the 1.00 Sol Silver Coin are:
