2856) Poptaslot Castle, The Netherlands: The Tenth and second last Coin to be released in the "Dutch Castles Coin Series": A Silver Ducat Trade Coin with a history spanning over 350 years, minted by the Royal Dutch Mint: Year of Coin issue: 2023:
A characteristic gatehouse, stunning 16th Century crow-stepped gables, the breathtaking beauty of the gardens welcomes one to Poptaslot Castle. It is located in the village of Marsum, near the provincial capital of Friesland, Leeuwarden.
Poptaslot or Heringastate is a stins - a type of luxurious house often used by and/or built for the nobility of Frisia, many of which are built to look like castles (meaning "stone-house") - in the Dutch province of Friesland (Fryslân).
It was built between 1512 and 1525, by Sasker van Camstra. It was named "Heringastate" when it was founded, using his mother’s surname Heringa. The construction of the castle began in 1512 by the Heringa family.
This name endured even when the Van Eysinga family got ownership of the castle trough an inheritance.
Around 1631 it was significantly changed and modernised.
The modernisation carried out by this family can still be admired today. Its beautiful, 17th-century interior is still intact.
In 1687, the "Heringa State" again got a new owner - Dr. Henricus Popta. Under his ownership of the castle, the name was changed to Poptaslot Castle. Popta, a lawyer, initially only intended to use the house as a summer residence.
Doctor Henricus Popta, declared that his house should never be lived in again and should be preserved. Presenty "slot guardians" (Dutch: "slotvoogden"), from the family still preserve the stins.
