2810) Faroe Islands Banknotes New Series - 2012: An updated version of the Faroese Banknote Series with new security features was introduced into circulation: Banknotes were printed by Danmarks Nationalbank:

In 2012, Danmarks Nationalbank issued an updated version of the Faroese Banknote Series with new security features. The motifs are Faroese animals and Faroese landscapes.

Motifs:

The common motif on the notes depicts Faroese animals. On the Front of the Banknotes the animals are untraditionally shown as fragments.

On the Reverse of the Banknotes, watercolours of Faroese landscapes by the Faroese artist Zacharias Heinesen are reproduced. The fauna motifs contribute life and variation to the notes, while the watercolours lend a special quality of lightness.

Security features:

Among the security features are a window thread with a moving wave pattern. A new special symbol on Front and Back and on the Back of the Banknote a mother-of-pearl thread and fluorescent colour has been added.

The old Faroese banknotes are still legal tender, but will gradually be withdrawn from circulation.

Act on Faroese banknotes:

The printing of Faroese banknotes is done according to the law governing banknotes in the Faroe Islands (from 1949). Pursuant to the law Danmarks Nationalbank must produce special Faroese banknotes carrying Faroese text. However, the denominations and the formats of the banknotes shall be the same as the banknotes that are put in circulation in Denmark.

The currency in the Faroe Islands is 1 króna and the exchange rate to the Danish banknotes is 1:1.

The Faroese banknotes are regarded as a foreign currency in Denmark thus they are not legal tender in Denmark, nor are Danish banknotes legal tender in the Faroe Islands

However, Faroese banknotes can be encashed to Danish banknotes free of charge at Danmarks Nationalbank in the same way as Danish banknotes can be encashed to Faroese banknotes in the Faroe Islands

The coins in the Faroe Islands and in Denmark are the same.

The new Currency in circulation:

The 50 Kroner Banknote:

On 03.07.2001, the 50  Kroner Banknote was issued.

In 2012, Danmarks Nationalbank has issued an updated version of the Faroese Banknote Series with new security features.

The Ram's horn on the Front of the 50 Krone Banknote is printed in intaglio.

The inscription reads - "50 FIMMTI KRONUR".

The background depicts a watercolour of a stone wall.

The principal motif on the Back of the 50 Krone Banknote is a hillside from village of Sumba on the West side of Suduroy.

Since the area is a typical pasture for sheep and rams, there is a natural link between the ram on the front and the landscape on the Back of this Banknote.

The inscription reads - "FOROYAR" (meaning "Faroe Islands").

The dimensions of this Banknote are - 125.00 mm x 72.00 mm.

The 100 Krone Banknote:

On 16.01.2003, the 100 Krone Banknote was issued.

In 2012, Danmarks Nationalbank has issued an updated version of this denomination in its new Faroese Banknote Series with new security features.

The motifs for this Banknote are based of fragments of Faroese faune

The Front of the 100 Krone Banknote shows a fragment of cod. The motifs are printed in intaglio. The background to the motif is a water colour with sea elements.

The inscription reads - "100 HUNDRAD KRONUR".

The Back of the 100 Krone Banknote shows a view of Klaksvik, one of the most important Faroese fishing ports.

More security - Compared to the 50 Krone Banknote issued in 2001, the 100 Krone Banknote has a new security feature - a hologram

With the existing security features - such as a security thread with the colour change and the watermark - this makes counterfeiting more difficult.

The dimensions of this Banknote are - 135.00 mm x 72.00 mm.

200 Krone Banknote:

On 19.01.2004 the 200 Krone Banknote was issued.

In 2012, Danmarks Nationalbank has issued an updated version of this denomination in its new Faroese Banknote Series with new security features.

On the Front of the 200 Krone Banknote is depicted a Ghost Moth with its wings spread. As on the other Banknotes in the Series, the motif is a fragment of a Faroese fauna species.

The Ghost Moth which is found all over the Faroe Islands, is printed in intaglio.

The background is a watercolour with blades of grass.

The inscription reads - "200 TVEY HUNDRAD KRONUR".

On the Back of the 200 Krone Banknote is the motif of Tindholmur near Vagar in watercolour.

The introduction of this denomination in the Faroese Banknote Series is the natural consequence of the Act on Faroese Banknotes which state that Faroese Banknotes shall have the same denomination as Danish Banknotes.

A Danish 200 Krone Banknote was introduced in 1997 for the purpose of settling payments using as few Banknotes and Coins as possible.

500 Krone Banknote:

On the Front of the 500 Krone Banknote is a fragment of a Shore Crab, which is found on every Faroese coast. The background to the Shore Crab is a watercolour of the sandy seabed viewed through water.

The inscription reads - "500 FIMM HUNDRAD KRONUR".

On the Back of the 500 Krone Banknote is a watercolour of Hvannasund. Many Shore Crabs can be found on the beach near the village of Hvannasund.

The dimensions of this Banknote are - 155.00 mm x 72.00 mm.

1000 Krone Banknote:

On the Front of the 1000 Krone Banknote is seen a fragment of a purple sandpiper in flight.

This bird is found in the Faroe Islands and has been chosen for the fine details shown by the contrast in its wings. Behind the purple sandpiper, a watercolour of a flock of birds has been reproduced.

The inscription reads - "1000 EITT TUSUND KRONUR".

The motif on the Back of the 1000 Krone Banknote is a watercolour of the view from the island of Sandoy.

The dimensions of this Banknote are - 165.00 mm x 72.00 mm.
