2820) The Croats Military Units - Contour Necktie, Croatia: First Coins issued in Euros after Croatia joined the European Union (EU): 6 Euro Silver and 100 Euro Gold Coins minted by the Mint of Croatia at their facilities in Sveta Nedelja, on behalf of the National Bank of Croatia: Date/Year of Coins issue: 02.05.2023:

The Croatian National Bank has released its first numismatic (or Collector Coin) denominated in Euros since the country adopted the single currency in January of this year.

The Header/Banner presents the 6 Euro Silver and 100 Euro Gold "Contour necktie" integrated into one

This uniquely shaped Coin highlights the simple necktie, which began its existence as an integral part of Croatian culture and has had a rich and fascinating history.

The Croats Military Units:

The Croats, (also known as "Cravats" or "Crabats"), were 17th-century light cavalry forces in Central Europe, comparable to the Hussars (who were a class of light cavalry, originating in Central Europe during the 15th and 16th Centuries).

The most notable engagement of the Croats was their participation on the side of the Catholic League in the Thirty Years' War

At the height of the Thirty Years' War, as many as 20,000 Croatian cavalry were in the service of the Imperial Army, including the majority of Wallenstein's harquebusiers.
The Croats were initially irregular units loosely organised in bands recruited by generals of the Habsburg monarchy

The soldiers who joined Croats signed contracts which expired after the military campaign would be over, most often for any booty and sometimes for a fee. They were dismissed after the military campaign was finished and returned in the spring to be recruited by their old commanders.

In 1623 the size of the Croat units under command of Count of Tilly was reduced from 172 hearths (Units) to 72. They participated in the 1623 "Battle of Stadtlohn" under Tilly's command.

Denmark hired in Croat troops during both the Swedish Wars (1657-1660) and the Scanian War (1676-79).

During the Scanian War they were led by Disznoldt and lodged in the heavily fortified town of Landskrona in Scania.

They were sent on "small war" missions together with the native friskytter corps and several of them were killed in battle.

The first regular Croat regiment was established in 1625 by Hector Ludwig Isolani, a military officer in service of Albrecht von Wallenstein.

They were engaged to confuse the enemy flanks by attacking their wings.  In many historical works the Croats have been criticised for their cruel methods.

The worst atrocities during the "Sack of Magdeburg" were committed by the Croats and Walloons.

By the end of 1633 the Croats began their service in the army of the Kingdom of France.

Besides carbine the Croat arms included two pistols.

Scarfs as an accessory to the military uniform:

The Croats wore scarves around their necks, probably for hygienic purposes.

During the Thirty Years' War the Croats came in contact with French who were impressed by their outfit and soon adopted the scarf, naming it after the Croats - "cravat" or "cravate" (in French), which evolved into the modern-day cravat and necktie.

In a similar fashion, the neck-tie (cravat), which first appeared as part of the Croatian military uniform in the form of a picturesque adornment around the necks of Croatian soldiers in the Thirty Years War, was also accepted as a mark of elegance throughout the world.

The tie (cravat), today an essential fashion accessory for men and women, was named after an item in the uniform of Croatian soldiers during the Thirty Years War.

As part of their uniform, they tied an eye-catching length of fabric around their necks

The Parisians noted this Croatian custom and adopted it as their own fashion detail, wearing neck ties 'à la croate', now forming the root of the French noun 'la cravate'. Croatia is still proud of this historical gem, and the Croatian Sabor has declared 18 October "Cravat Day".

Croatian mercenaries, who were hired by King Louis XIII, had a piece of red cloth tied around their neck with their costume. This fancy red cloth captured the attention of the King. He was so fascinated by this decorative accessory that he demanded to make it a mandatory accessory during royal gatherings.

Legacy:

- The influence of the Croat military units was so strong that between 1631 and 1638 similar units were established in Bavaria, Spain and France.

- At the beginning of the 20th century, mothers still scared their children with tales about the 1631 Sack of Magdeburg in which Croats took part.

- The population of Eastern France compared all invasions after the Thirty Years' War with stories about Croats and Swedes who ravaged their territory in the 1630s.

The Croats are mentioned in "Simplicius Simplicissimus" (which is a picaresque novel of the lower Baroque style, written in five books by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen published in 1668, with the sequel Continuatio appearing in 1669. Inspired by the events and horrors of the Thirty Years' War which devastated Germany from 1618 to 1648, it is regarded as the first adventure novel in the German language and the first German novel masterpiece. The full subtitle is "The account of the life of an odd vagrant named Melchior Sternfels von Fuchshaim: namely where and in what manner he came into this world, what he saw, learned, experienced, and endured therein; also why he again left it of his own free will.)"

- The Croats are also mentioned in Friedrich Schiller's Wallenstein (Wallenstein is the popular designation of a trilogy of dramas by German author Friedrich Schiller. It consists of the plays Wallenstein's Camp (Wallensteins Lager), a lengthy prologue, The Piccolomini (Die Piccolomini), and Wallenstein's Death (Wallensteins Tod). In this drama Schiller addresses the decline of the famous general Albrecht von Wallenstein, basing it loosely on actual historical events during the Thirty Years' War.

- The surname Horvát or Horváth, which literally means 'Croat', is one of the most common surnames in Hungary and among the Hungarian minority in Slovakia, (although not all Hungarians with the surname are of Croatian origin), but the fact that the name is so widespread is an indication of the hundreds of years of connections between Croatia and Hungary and the migration of populations in the past.

- The Cravat Regiment is a guard of honour Regiment established in 2010 in Zagreb, Croatia, which wears uniforms that are replicas of those worn by the Croats.

The Coins:

The coins have been minted by the Mint of Croatia at their facilities in Sveta Nedelja, on behalf of the National Bank of Croatia.  The issue of “Contour Necktie” consists of two coins of different shapes, made of different precious metals, gold and silver.

The concept includes a two-piece strike with the gold necktie itself designed and struck separately to the outer round silver coin with a specific cut-out to accommodate the necktie

The Reverse design of the Coins depicts Croatian soldiers who fought under the French flag in the Thirty Years’ War during the 17th century.

Around their necks is a scarf, better known today as a "cravat", which immediately attracted the attention of the French.

The scarf caught the attention of young King Louis XIV, who started wearing the cravat, and speaks volumes about its acceptance.

As with the King, all the French quickly embraced it and wore scarves around their necks “à la create,” meaning, “in the Croatian way.”

The inscription "À LA CROATE" (inscribed on the upper periphery) is included as part of the design and highlight to this iconic fashion and cultural item.

On the lower periphery is the text "REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA 6 EURO 2023.

The Obverse design of the Coins depicts the tie as it is worn today with a gentleman’s jacket and a button-down shirt.

The text which is shown on the tie itself in a diagonal direction, reads "REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA 100 EURO 2023".

    1. Yes, they are, Vikram. The Croats soldiers began a new fashion - that of wearing neckties. It started with them covering their faces with scarves in the thick of battle and gradually it got refined to everyone wearing a cravat or necktie. All of us had to suffer wearing one in official functions. 😀
