2587) Tarzan of the Apes, Netherlands: A Medal/ Coin issued by the Royal Dutch Mint (RDM) depicting the popular fictional legend of Tarzan of the Apes: Date/Year of Coin/Medal issued: 2022:

We all know the story of Tarzan.

Many movies and animation series have been made about the fictional "King of the Jungle".

Tarzan is originally the main character in a book series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs

His very first story titled - "Tarzan of the Apes", was published in a magazine in 1912

To commemorate the 110th anniversary of this first story, the Royal Dutch Mint (RDM) has released a special Coin featuring the iconic figure of Tarzan.

The Story of Tarzan:

The classic Tarzan-story is well-known to almost everyone - John Clayton is born in the African jungle, after his parents are stranded there after a shipwreck.

His parents die and John is adopted by the ape Kala, who calls him Tarzan.

Tarzan grows up among the apes but does not know his true origin. When he goes back to his parent’s cabin in a tree-top, he finds some children’s books and starts the search to his true past.

Tarzan has proven to be a great source of inspiration for many generations.

The first Tarzan film came out 1918 and in the years that follow many more film adaptations were released, including the Disney animated film from 1999.

About Edgar Rice Burroughs:

Edgar Rice Burroughs (01.09.1875 – 19.03.1950) was an American author, best known for his prolific output in the adventure, science fiction, and fantasy genres.

Best-known for creating the characters Tarzan and John Carter, he also wrote the "Pellucidar series", the "Amtor series", and the "Caspak trilogy".

Tarzan was immediately popular, and Burroughs capitalised on it in every way possible, including a syndicated Tarzan comic strip, movies, and merchandise.

Tarzan remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day and is a cultural icon.

Burroughs's California ranch is now the center of the Tarzana neighborhood in Los Angeles, named after the character.

Burroughs was an explicit supporter of eugenics and scientific racism in both his fiction and nonfiction; Tarzan was meant to reflect these concepts.

The Medal/Coin Design:

For the Coin/medal, a 3D-design has been selected.

The Reverse of the Cupro-nickel Coin/Medal contains the Tarzan-logo, with behind that some lianas from the jungle. (A liana is a long-stemmed, woody vine that is rooted in the soil at ground level and uses trees, as well as, other means of vertical support, to climb up to the canopy in search of direct sunlight).

An ape and a lion are also seen in the design.

On the Obverse of the Cupro-nickel Coin/Medal, is seen an image of Tarzan, holding a spear and the mane of a lion.

On top is the text "Since 1912", the year in which the first Tarzan story came out.

The Medal/Coin is placed in Coincard, which has an Obverse with several covers of original Tarzan books and films

On the Obverse of the CoinCard are depicted Edgar Rice Burroughs - the author of the Tarzan stories (at left). Also displayed are a black and white drawing, highlighting some important characters from the books, including Tarzan and his beloved Jane.

The specifications of this Cupro-nickel Coin are:
