Dormition Abbey: 5th in the "Holy Land Sites" Numismatic Bullion Series:
The Dormition Abbey is believed to have been where Mary, Jesus' mother, entered her internal sleep.
"Dormito" means "sleep" in Latin, which is the reason the church was named "The Abbey of the Dormition," in honour of Mary.
The church is located at Mount Zion in Jerusalem, close to the Southern wall of the old city, near Zion's Gate and David's Tomb.
In 1898 the Emperor of Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm II came on a visit to the Holy Land.
In 1910, during his second visit in the region, Kaiser Wilhelm II received the land in which the Dormition Abbey is located presently from the Ottoman Sultan and was given the rights to build "The Dormition Abbey Church".
The Church is built in Romanesque architecture, as can be seen in the magnificent roundness of the church architecture, with a diameter of 15.00 meters.
According to the Christian tradition, Mary did not die as an ordinary mortal but fell into an internal sleep and was picked up by her son Jesus into the heavens. Mount Zion is believed to be the location from where Mary was brought up into the heavens.
