About Zion Gate:

Zion Gate is another of the gates in the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem built by demand of the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century Ottoman period.

For its proximity to Mount Zion, the Gate bears the name Zion Gate. It is also known as David's Gate, for being near to King David's tomb on Mount Zion.

Close to Zion Gate are the "Room of the Last Supper" and the "Dormitory Abbey", both holy sites in Christian tradition.

On  18.05.1948, at the beginning of the Israel War for Independence, the Israeli Palmach forces led by Uzi Narkiss dramatically broke through into the Old City through Zion Gate.

Their aim was to reach the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, which was then under siege, provide assistance for the Quarter's citizens and their small military force and curb the attacks by the Jordanian Legion. The many bullet holes in the gate are testimony to the battle.

Zion Gate leads directly to both the Jewish and Armenian Quarters.
