2283) "Archey's Frog, ("Leiopelma archeyi)" New Zealand: "Endangered Wildlife Coin Series": B.H. Mayer's Kunstprageanstalt GmbH Mint has minted this $5 Antique Finish (AF) Silver Coin on behalf of New Zealand Mint: Coin issue Date: 18.03.2022:

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand, along with New Zealand Post, have released their annual silver coin focusing on the country’s endangered wildlife.

For 2022, the silver and colour coins feature the Leiopelma archeyi, commonly known as "Archey’s Frog", an Endangered species

The Header/Banner shows the Reverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) coin depicting the Archey's Frog against a background representation of a photograph of an actual Archey's Frog

The Archey's Frog:

Archey's frog is an archaic species of frog endemic to the North Island of New Zealand.

It is one of only three extant species belonging to the taxonomic family Leiopelmatidae

It is named after Gilbert Archey, the former director of the Auckland Institute.

It is found only in the Coromandel Peninsula and near Te Kuiti in the North Island of New Zealand. This species, along with others in the family, have changed little over the past 200 million years, thus they represent "living fossils".

The Coin:

The Coin has been minted by the BH Mayer’s Kunstprageanstalt GmbH Mint at their facilities in Munich, on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

The Reverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) Silver Coin features a detailed colour illustration of Archey’s frog.

The frog’s hues of green, red, and brown are highlighted with the vibrant and realistic rendering of the vivid colour process utilised during production.

The coin has been minted using an oxidised process resulting in an Antique Finish (AF), and a detailed engraved background gives greater relief to the primary design and background.

To the upper-left of the frog is the denomination of "$5" and the text - "ARCHEY’S FROG" is shown just beneath.

The Obverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) Silver Coin depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right . The coins’ weight and fineness of ".999 Ag. 2oz" are engraved on the upper periphery, with the year of issue "2022" placed below.

Dedication:

The coin is dedicated to the late Dr. Phil Bishop (1957–2021), a professor and head of the zoology department at the University of Otago. As a herpetologist, he specialised in amphibian biology and was actively involved in frog conservation. Phil collaborated with students and scientists around New Zealand, as well as, with New Zealand Post, over the artist’s impression of Archey’s frog used on this coin.

The specification of the Silver Coin are:
