2857) "The Hanged Man", Tarot Cards, Niue Island: The Thirteenth $2 (Two Dollars) Coin Card released by the New Zealand Mint on behalf of Niue Island: Year of Coin issue: 2023:
For some of us, the thought of Tarot cards inspires visions of a mysterious fortune teller dealing out cards while a foreboding and ominous silence cloaks the colourfully dressed woman in darkness as she discerns the querent's future from what the cards have to say.
For several others, Tarot cards are used for conventional games where the cards are used without any danger of occult implications.
No matter what one thinks of Tarot cards, this Card is an absolute beauty replete with symbolism.
"The Hanged Man" Tarot Card presents an image replete with Symbolism:
Tarot decks first appeared in Italy in the 1430s, and unlike regular card decks that number 52 cards consisting of four suits; Spades, Clubs, Diamonds, and Hearts; Tarot card decks have a five suit, - Swords (representing the Air Element), "Wands" (representing the Fire element), "Cups" (representing the Water Element), "Pentacles" (Representing the Coins or the material/ground element). There is also the "Major Arcana" (Major Secrets), of 21 specially illustrated cards called “Triumphs” and an odd card called “The Fool.” (The Major Arcana represents the Fool's journey in Life).
"The Hanged Man" is the Thirteenth card in the Major Arcana.
"The Hanged Man" Tarot Card Description:
The Hanged Man depicts a man being hoisted from a T-shaped living wood cross.
His expression is calm and placid, as if he chose to be in this hanging position and has accepted/resigned to the circumstances surrounding him. He is upside down, looking at the world from an entirely different angle.
His halo surrounds his head, representing new perception, awareness, and enlightenment. His left foot is free and is bent at the knee and tucked behind his right leg, while his right foot is tied to the tree. His arms are bent into an inverted triangle and his hands are behind his back.
The man is dressed in a blue vest to represent wisdom and red pants to represent human passion and the physical body. The Hanged Man symbolises total surrender, being suspended in time, martyrdom, and giving one's life for the greater good.
The Hanged Man Tarot Card appears exactly after the Justice card and before the Death card in the Major Arcana. It represents the calm before the storm or a significant change, which is all about transformation.
The Hanged Man represents a time when one can take the necessary steps to create a significant change in one's life.
The Hanged Man reminds us that sometimes one has to put everything on hold before he/she can move forward.
It is superbly crafted into a rectangular coin, shaped to reflect a Tarot card.
