3227) Netherlands: Second Silver Proof Ducat Released in Dutch City Gates Series Features the Amsterdamse Poorte: Date/Year of Ducat issue: 14.03.2024:
Dutch City Gates - Second Ducat Coin in the Series features the Amsterdamse Poorte
Featuring some of the country’s most historical defence fortress gates and access roads, the latest coin focuses on the city of Haarlem and the national monument known as Amsterdamse Poort. The impressive landmark which is a national monument can be found in the medieval city of Haarlem located in the northwest of the country.
The town was once a major North Sea trading port surrounded by a defensive wall and still retains its medieval character of cobblestone streets and gabled houses. The Gate is located at the end of the old route from Amsterdam to Haarlem, and remains the only gate left intact from the original twelve city gates which surrounded and guarded the town.
Dating from the middle of the 14th century, the Amsterdamse Poort’s initial construction consisted of the gate itself and a large tower that acted as a defence of the passage from Haarlem to Amsterdam. This tower is connected to a front gate, which is located just below and also surrounded by two smaller round towers.
The presence of a Burgundian city crest and the Imperial Habsburg coat of arms indicates that the front gate was put in place sometime during the 15th century. The landmark is also known as the Spaarnwouderpoort, and was the first Haarlem defence Gate to be referenced in official documentation.
The Gate was also the scene where legendary folk heroine Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer (1526 – 1588) a wood merchant living in Haarlem is remembered for her fearless defence of the city against the Spanish invaders during the siege of Haarlem in 1573.
Aside from her fearless bravery in the face of invasion, history records the remarkable survivability of the Gate as it withstood the siege with no significant damage sustained.
Presently, the Amsterdamse Poort remains an impressive structure and is testament to the history and resilience the City has withstood since it’s royal charter in 1245.
The interior and premises of the Amsterdamse Poort are not open to the public, however it is still possible to walk through the gate as pedestrians have done for the last seven centuries, cycling is also allowed and encouraged.
The Coin:
The Reverse of the Silver Ducat depicts Duke Karel van Egmond (1467 – 1538) standing in front of the towers and gate of the Amsterdamse Poort.
At his peak, he ruled as Duke of Guelders and Count of Zutphen and also was the last independent feudal ruler of the Netherlands.
The provincial crest of North Holland is depicted on his shield. The traditional inscription for these coins encircles the primary design and reads - "MO.NO.ARG.REG.BELGII. HOL.SEP" - (The Latin legend is abbreviated for "Moneta Nova Argenta Regni Belgii Septentrionalis Hollandia") – translated as ‘New Silver coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Hol Sep’ being the Latin word to reference the Province of North Holland.
On the Obverse of the Silver Ducat is the national crest of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the Royal Crown placed between the two numerals of the year "2024". The inscription reads "CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT", meaning - "Unity makes Strength" which is placed around the crest along the periphery.
The mintmaster’s privy mark is placed just under the first two numerals of the year and the mintmark of the Royal Dutch Mint is shown just under the second two numerals.
The specifications of the Silver Ducat are:
