4034) "Beloved Opera, Norma by Bellini", Republic of Italy (REPUBBLICA ITALIANA): 5 Euro Silver Colour and  Proof Rectangular Coins issued by the IPZS: Date/Year of Coin issue: 24.06.2025:

The IPZS release new silver coins highlighting one of the world’s most prestigious theatres.

Norma is a tragedia lirica or opera in two \acts by Vincenzo Bellini with libretto by Felice Romani after the play “Norma”, ou “L'infanticide” (“Norma”, or “The Infanticide”) by Alexandre Soumet.

It was first produced at La Scala in Milan on 26 December 1831.

The opera is regarded as a leading example of the bel canto genre, and the soprano prayer "Casta diva" in Act 1 is a famous piece.

Among the well known singers of Norma of the first half of the 20th century was Rosa Ponselle who played the role in New York and London. Notable exponents of the title role in the post-war period have been Giuditta Pasta, Maria Callas, Leyla Gencer, Joan Sutherland, and Montserrat Caballé.

The first opera singer to perform Norma at La Scala is recreated on the obverse.

The latest coin in the series focussing on Italian Arts is a timeless tribute to Italian opera and in particular to Norma, Vincenzo Bellini's masterpiece.

The theme also focusses on the incomparable Teatro alla Scala in Milan which hosted its first performance in 1831.

Celebrated for its finely shaped melodies and exquisite arias, Bellini‘s powerful opera is full of ravishing music. Norma is set in Roman-occupied Gaul - modern-day France around 50 BC and tells the story of a Druid high priestess in ancient Gaul.

She secretly has two children with the Roman proconsul Pollione, breaking her vows of chastity. When Pollione abandons her for the young priestess Adalgisa, Norma grapples with betrayal, revenge, and ultimately, self-sacrifice. The opera culminates in Norma confessing her infidelity and choosing to die with Pollione at the stake, showcasing her nobility and strength.

In the title role of Norma was Giuditta Pasta (1797 - 1865) the reigning Italian soprano Prima Donna of her time, acclaimed for her vocal range and expressiveness

Pasta’s vocal range and dramatic power were so remarkable that several leading composers wrote operas for her, notably Vincenzo Bellini who composed Norma, and which she debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in December 1831.
